Azure Rathalos is the blue-colored and stronger subspecies of Monster Hunter Now‘s mascot, Rathalos. Just like Black Diablos and Pink Rathian, it sports tougher attacks and different move patterns compared to its normal variant. In Azure Rathalos’ case, it’s more mobile and relies on aerial attacks with wind pressure that can turn unsuspecting Hunters into its next meal. Before you head out to find one, here are several things you should know that can help make your hunts go faster.
Monster Hunter Now: Where to Find Azure Rathalos
Azure Rathalos can be found in the Forest areas after completing Chapter 13 of Monster Hunter Now, where you finally unlock the normal Rathalos fight. But at the time of writing, Azure Rathalos will only spawn during the “Descent of the Azure King” Event, which runs from January 15 to 21, 2024.
All HR 11 players can encounter Rathalos and Azure Rathalos more often when their spawn rates are boosted. For more details on the Monster Hunter Now Azure Rathalos appearances, below is the event schedule:
- Azure Rathalos will appear from Monday, January 15, 2024, at 9:00 AM until Sunday, January 21, 2024, at midnight.
- Rathalos and Azure Rathalos spawn rates boost schedule:

- During this period, time-limited Event Quests will appear, and completing it will reward players with the Descent of the Azure King Medal.
How to Defeat an Azure Rathalos
Unlike Rathalos which takes bonus damage from Thunder, in Monster Hunter Now Azure Rathalos is weak against Ice and Dragon instead. Ice weapons with 397 Attack stat are enough to defeat Azure Rathalos, such as the Legiana Grade 5 Level 3 Freeze Blade Great Sword.
Defeating an Azure Rathalos takes the same approach as the normal one, however it flies more often than the normal version. Sticking close to its legs while it hovers is a good way to deal damage, but it has a few tricks to keep Hunters away.
First, Azure Rathalos will do a 60-degree angle fire breath and burn the grass around it. It doesn’t deal much damage, but the burning grass will inflict Burn when stepped upon and eat away at your health. The blue Flying Wyvern can also do a tail swipe often if you’re standing behind it. Lastly, it will do a charged slam to anyone below it with its sharp claw, dealing hard-hitting Poison damage. Nevertheless, the attack takes time to perform so you can use this moment to counter with a Special Skill!
The most dangerous attack that an Azure Rathalos can perform in Monster Hunter Now are two types of fireballs. One, it will throw up a quick fireball and then fly backward. What makes this move dangerous is it produces wind pressure, locking your Hunter in place for a few seconds if you’re close to its body. The other move is the charged fireball it does when on the ground. It hits hard but thankfully not hard to dodge, so quickly reposition yourself to aim at its head or wing.
Keep close to it when it hovers around and avoid standing in front of its maw when it’s on the ground. Utilize Special Skills when it roars or performs the slam attack, and you should conquer any Azure Rathalos you find in Monster Hunter Now.
