Besides planting crops, you can also have various animals on your Stardew Valley farm. While you can feed them Hay, your livestock can also eat the wild grass that grows on the ground. The 1.6 update even adds Blue Grass, which grants a positive effect on your farm animals. The easiest way to get Blue Grass in Stardew Valley is by picking the correct farm map, but you can also obtain this unique plant by using a Starter.

Stardew Valley Blue Grass Explained

Blue Grass is a special plant that can boost your farm animals’ heart level progression rate. This buff is great because you can unlock high-quality goods much faster than feeding them Hay or regular green grass. Just let your livestock out, and they will automatically feed on this new turf. Note that you cannot harvest Blue Hay by cutting Blue Grass.

You can get Blue Grass on your Stardew Valley farm via two methods:

  • Use the Meadow Farm map.
  • Purchase the Blue Grass Starter Recipe.

The easiest way to get Blue Grass is by picking the Meadow Farm map introduced in the 1.6 update. Not only will you get this magical plant, but you can also obtain two chicks at the start of your journey. That means you should be able to get high-quality animal products much earlier.

If you use other farm types, you must first build the animal coop and barn on your farm. Then, you need to plant Blue Grass yourself after purchasing the Starter Recipe from Qi’s Walnut Room.

Building an animal coop is easy, but you must reach the end game to access Qi’s Walnut Room. Here are the steps you must follow:

  1. Unlock Ginger Island by fixing Willy’s boat.
  2. Locate and gather 100 Golden Walnuts.
  3. Go to the island’s east side to enter the Qi’s Walnut Room.

I recommend just creating a new save and picking the Meadow Farm if you really want Blue Grass. The second method is too complicated and lengthy and is meant for end-game players. If you already unlock Ginger Island, you’ve likely maxed out your animals’ heart levels.

At that point, there is not much use in having Blue Grass on your farm except for decorations. After all, you can get the most benefit from this new plant at the start of your journey when you need extra money from selling high-quality animal products.
