While the dangerous islands of Windrose are brimming with materials, one particularly hard-to-find item is gunpowder. Contrary to other materials, this isn’t one you can easily ignore, as you’ll need a lot of it eventually, especially if you’re going for a ranged build. With that in mind, we’ve prepared a guide to show you how to craft or find gunpowder, including all the steps you need to take in order to unlock one of the most elusive yet most important materials in the game.
How To Unlock and Craft Gunpowder in Windrose
Like many other recipes in Windrose, unlocking gunpowder will require you to complete a few steps and even unlock a brand-new biome before you can craft it.
For gunpowder, you first need to defeat the boss or major threat, as the game calls it, of Coastal Jungle. After doing that, you’ll be able to visit the second biome, and here’s where things will get interesting.
First, you need to craft a copper pickaxe and start gathering iron ore. After that, you need to craft an iron pickaxe through a level 2 workbench, which will allow you to mine sulfur. As soon as you collect sulfur, you’ll get the gunpowder recipe; all you need now is ash and a millstone.

The former is easy to obtain, as you only need a kiln. Whenever you craft charcoal, there’s a chance you’ll obtain ashes. Make sure to grab them as soon as they become available.
After that, you need a millstone, which you can unlock after gathering corn from the second biome. Once you have the recipe, craft the millstone and then throw in your sulfur and ashes to get homemade gunpowder.
It is important to note that crafting gunpowder isn’t cheap, and it might take a while to get a good amount of it, especially since you need 25 of both ashes and sulfur to craft a batch of homemade gunpowder.
Now, if you’re not a big fan of just waiting around until the ashes appear and prefer a more hands-on yet not-so-reliable approach to obtain this material, there are chances to find gunpowder in some of the enemy camps around all of Windrose. However, this isn’t the best way to obtain it, but it can be a good change of pace from all the crafting and gathering.
In any case, gunpowder is one of the few tedious materials to get because the rest of the things in Windrose aren’t too challenging to obtain; they can be a bit time-consuming, though, so just be patient when farming any of these reagents.
