One of the best parts of mash-up brawlers like Super Smash Bros. and MultiVersus is choosing a character. With so many to choose from, however, that choice isn’t easy. Should you follow the meta and learn whoever’s strongest? Should you just play the character from your favorite show? Even if you’re drawn to a certain character, it can be hard to tell whether their playstyle will be an adrenaline rush or a complete snoozefest. From Harley Quinn and Garnet to Marvin the Martian and LeBron, we’ve got you covered. Here’s how to pick your main in MultiVersus.
Breaking Down the Roles in MultiVersus
MultiVersus divides its characters into four categories, based on their stats and the way they fight. There’s a big difference between the feel of a speedy Assassin or ranged Mage versus a punchy Bruiser or hulking Tank. If you enjoy a certain character’s playstyle but want to explore other options, checking out the other characters in their category is a great place to start. Bugs Bunny might not look like The Joker, but you’d be surprised how much they have in common (and not just clowning around).
Assassin
- Arya
- Finn
- Harley Quinn
- Marvin the Martian
- Stripe
Assassins specialize in getting close to their target and dealing big damage. As a trade-off for that mobility and DPS, Assassins lack strong ranged options. They’re also lightweight, causing them to get knocked farther and pushed around by heavier characters. Finn is an excellent introduction to Assassins, with high combo potential and fun moves. Harley can be a bit harder to learn but is rewarding and brings that Suicide Squad style, making her another great main to pick in MultiVersus.
Bruiser
- Banana Guard
- Batman
- Black Adam
- Garnet
- Jake
- LeBron James
- Morty
- Shaggy
- Taz
Bruisers are jack-of-all-trades characters. They don’t specialize in any area, but they can put up a well-rounded fight across the board. This tends to make them easy characters to pick up and learn. Shaggy is one of the best Bruisers to learn, with a solid balance of abilities that makes for a great introduction to MultiVersus. If you’re looking for a Bruiser alternative, Jake offers similar advantages but his own unique playstyle, whether you’re parrying or dishing out the pain.
Mage
- Bugs Bunny
- Gizmo
- Reindog
- Rick
- Steven Universe (also a Tank)
- The Joker
- Tom & Jerry
- Velma
Mages are ranged characters specializing in set-up and control. If the opponent gets in close, they’re at a severe disadvantage, but they can dominate the battlefield from afar with their projectiles and other tricks. Bugs Bunny and Gizmo are two of the easiest Mages to recommend, as characters like Rick are much harder to learn. After you’ve mastered these two, you’ll be prepared to pick trickier Mages to main in MultiVersus.
Tank
- Iron Giant
- Jason
- Steven Universe (also a Mage)
- Superman
- Wonder Woman
Tanks are all about endurance. Although they’re slower and have less overall combo potential than other character types, they’re much sturdier. Between their armor, weight, and other factors, Tanks are much harder to bully around the stage, even if you have lag issues. Wonder Woman has a lot to offer among the Tanks, including ease of use and good combo potential. Superman is a great Tank alternative if you want to switch things up.
Who Should You Main in MultiVersus?
If you’re new to MultiVersus or fighting games in general, consider playing Finn, Shaggy, Bugs Bunny, or Wonder Woman. They’re good examples of their types, relatively easy to learn, and have a ton of potential if you put the time in. With enough hours in training and 1v1s, you’ll give your opponent a whole different reason to say “What’s up, Doc?”
MultiVersus is available for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
