Starfield is a big game, and there’s a lot to do. Several factions will task you with missions, and you can customize your ship. But all it takes is for something to go wrong before you lose that progress. It is disheartening when you have to start over, as it sucks all the fun out of the game. If you can make frequent saves, that prevents you from losing all of your progress should an unexpected bug emerge. But you can’t save at the beginning, and the process isn’t highlighted. Here’s how to save your game in Starfield and what the procedure looks like.

Starfield does autosave to ensure that you always have a file on hand to reload. They are usually taken at the beginning of an area, though they can also pop in when the story needs them to. If you want to make a manual save, you must wait until character creation is finished before you start. Once that is completed, you get the chance to save your game properly. A few autosaves have also been made to prevent you from losing too much progress.

Open the menu and go down to the Save option. You can then make a manual save file that you can reload at any time. Make sure you have a way to keep track of your saves since you can’t label them. Overwriting your saves will bring up a confirmation before the process goes through.

Saving your game in Starfield is similar to Fallout 4 in that you are thrown back into the action once the save is complete. This allows you to make multiple saves if you want to experiment with various strategies. It’s all good before making dialogue choices, though you cannot make a save during the decision process. There will be several decisions throughout the game where your choices matter, and you should save frequently.

If you think the game is too easy and doesn’t need many saves, you can always fall back on autosaves to track your progress. Keep in mind that the game may have glitches or bugs that can affect your data if you encounter them. As rare as they might be, you want to make sure you have some way to save your game in Starfield. The alternative is losing a good chunk of progress and restarting missions from the beginning.
