How To Trip Enemies in God of War Ragnarok

Sweep them off their feet.

If you are playing God of War Ragnarok on one of the higher difficulties, playing any of the Crucible challenges, or are simply playing the Valhalla DLC, it pays to know how to take some enemies out of the picture quicker than others. In this guide, you will learn how to trip enemies in God of War Ragnarok and single them out. Keep in mind that this will only work on enemies that are on their feet and are human-sized. So don’t go trying to trip a troll because it won’t work; it will just give it all the more reason to swing its massive tree stump in your direction. The same goes for the light elves floating above the ground; it’s better to headshot them and remove their masks instead.

You can only trip an enemy while wielding the Leviathan Axe, as this does not work with the Blades of Chaos or the Draupnir Spear. To trip an enemy, simply aim for their knees or their feet with your axe equipped and perform a light throw with R1. Remember that the heavy throw with R2 will embed the axe into the enemy instead of tripping them.

There are ways to get more out of tripping an enemy. If you have the Frost Awaken Charge, then tripping an enemy will also bounce them. If you have the Vengeful Sickle ability unlocked, you can charge the R1 throw and aim at the legs to ensure that the enemy stays occupied for longer.

This works extremely well when you are dealing with a lot of enemies and want to get some off the table. You can switch to one of your other weapons or even recall the axe and land a charged Heavy Attack (R2) to rack up some real damage. Or if you’re surrounded, aim for enemy legs in quick succession with successive axe recalls.

And remember, if you want to practice this ability and really get the hang of it, give Niflheim a quick visit. There, you can try tripping all sorts of different enemies and practicing some combos before you head into some real challenges.
