In the clip posted to X, Rep. Gill presses witness Mr. Newman on whether undocumented immigrants should receive taxpayer-funded unemployment benefits. Newman initially responds that the issue is not within his area of expertise. Gill then references a petition from Newman’s organization, the National Day Laborer Organizing Network, which called on Governor Gavin Newsom to sign AB 2847 and expand benefits to workers excluded because of their immigration status.
When pressed further, Newman replies that “I don’t know what you mean by illegal aliens,” but states that if the question concerns residents in California, the answer is yes. The back-and-forth continues as Gill clarifies he is referring to people who entered the country illegally, and Newman notes that people come for various reasons and without documentation.
The video focuses solely on the exchange between Gill and Newman at the witness table and does not include the proceedings before or after the moment went viral. According to the video and accompanying post, the petition in question called for unemployment benefits to be extended to workers who are currently ineligible because of their immigration status.

The clip sparked reactions online, with many commenters focusing on the potential financial impact on taxpayers.“The cost to U.S. taxpayers to continue to support the massive numbers of Illegal aliens is destroying our country. They are draining U.S. taxpayers of $150.7 BILLION annually. Deportations should be ongoing 24/7.” wrote one commenter.
Others criticized the witness’s response directly. One user said, “Newman has the woke mind virus,” while another wrote, “Another loser who can’t even answer an easy question! … They all seem to be brainwashed.”
Several users emphasized that no benefits should go to illegal aliens, with comments such as: “Not one single penny of American tax dollars should be given to illegals. If a charity or group wants to support illegals, then they should do it on their own,” and “If they are illegal, then they simply have no business receiving any benefits.
