Of all the many things to have an anniversary about, commemorating the day the police believed you were a murderer probably isn’t common. Though this is exactly what Reddit user MuffinMan6938 says in his r/badroommates post, recalling how the Massachusetts State Police allegedly thought he had killed his own roommate. This wild tale began 10 years ago when Muffin Man’s roommate went kayaking but didn’t return.
Authorities naturally investigated the roommate’s residence, where Muffin Man answered the door and casually told a state trooper investigating the case some telling details. “I mentioned that my roommate had a drinking problem and that I had caught him stealing from me literally the first week he moved in,” OP said. This random comment changed the tone of the conversation, and what followed was something Muffin Man wasn’t expecting.
Come several hours later, a group of officers showed up at Muffin Man’s door in a rather aggressive mood. “It went from ‘we’re looking for your roommate’ to feeling like I was being interrogated pretty fast,” he recalled. The trooper demanded OP stay put at home for further questioning, but he said he had to leave for work soon. That’s when the trooper allegedly shouted, “You better not leave the Boston area!”
The search escalated into the Coast Guard sending out a helicopter and two boats to look for the roommate. The whole story even appeared on the news, to Muffin Man’s surprise. The roommate’s girlfriend eventually called, asking to borrow the keys to look for clues in the apartment; that’s when the roommate was found: lo and behold, “soaking wet, exhausted, half dead and halfway through the window.”
The Roommate Had Made It Back Home by Breaking in Through a Window
Apparently, the roommate had gotten drunk and fallen off his kayak during a storm, lost all of his belongings, and eventually reached shore. Since he lost his keys, he pushed in a window’s A/C unit and climbed in through the bedroom. The same state trooper called Muffin Man to let him know the roommate had been found, to which OP demanded to know what the aggressive interrogation earlier was all about. “Basically all I got was, ‘I gotta go.’ Click,” was the response.
The question that was on many Redditors’ minds after reading this story was, “What was your roommate’s response to causing all this drama?” OP claimed he just acted like a victim, flipping him off before leaving the house. “The guy was a thorn in my side pretty much from day one. During his first week living there, I caught him stealing from me which he eventually admitted to,” Muffin Man sighed.
“Imagine if he had actually turned up dead…” remarked a commenter. “Exactly I was going to title it “ I was almost Karen Reeded,” OP exclaimed. Fortunately for him, he wasn’t accused of anything, and the troublesome roommate eventually left the house. However, this whole fiasco has definitely been a tale he’ll never forget.
