An Idaho mother shared how she was compelled to confront a child after the child allegedly approached her son aggressively and demanded to play with his toy.

The mother shared a video of the confrontation along with a caption explaining what happened. She claimed that she was at the beach with her son when another child approached him and “very aggressively” asked to play with his toy. The mother said she watched as her son reluctantly handed it over, after which the child took the toy and swam away with it despite not owning it.

Today while we were at the beach, a boy came up to Nathan and was very aggressively asking to play with his toy. My son can be very passive at times and I watched as he reluctantly gave it up and the kid proceeeded to swim away from him. I stepped in and asked the boy to give my son his toy back. I could immediately tell that this kid was not used to being told no. He immediately started crying and arguing with me. I insisted that he needed to give it back. A few minutes later, he came back and asked why I told him to give it back. He seemed to not quite understand, but I was adamant on my advocation for my son. I still don’t know where that kiddos parents were, but I did have someone come up and ask if I was a teacher after 😂 how would you have handled this? #parenting #sharing #advocate #momsoftiktok

“I could immediately tell that this kid was not used to being told no,” the mom said after asking the child to return the toy to her son. She claimed that the boy began crying and arguing with her after she made the request. The mom said she continued insisting that the toy belonged to her son and needed to be returned.

The mom then said the child later returned and asked why she had told him to give the toy back. She explained the situation to him and tried to calmly explain why the toy needed to be returned. “He seemed to not quite understand, but I was adamant on my advocacy for my son,” she said.

The mother wrote on top of the video, “Had to parent someone else’s kid today.” In the footage, she could be heard telling the child, “Please give it back to him,” referring to her son. She then reminded her son that he did not have to give away his belongings if he did not want to, telling him that next time he could simply say, “No, thank you.” “You don’t have to give up your toy,” she added.

The next part of the video showed the child asking the mother why she had taken the toy back. She calmly explained that it belonged to her son and that he had brought it from home. “He doesn’t want to share right now. He doesn’t have to,” she told the child.

The mother continued trying to acknowledge the child’s feelings rather than responding harshly. “I’m sorry, honey. I know it’s hard. It’s very hard,” she told him. The boy then replied, “I was crying,” and the mother calmly reassured him that it was okay to cry. However, she explained, “But crying doesn’t mean that you’re always gonna get it.” The video ended shortly afterward.

Despite the conversation lasting for some time, the child’s parents never appeared in the video. The mother later asked internet users how they would have handled the situation if they were in the same position.

Viewers Side With Idaho Mom Over Toy Argument

The video sparked reactions online. Many viewers supported the Idaho mother and praised how she handled the situation. They believed she acknowledged the child’s emotions while also standing up for her son’s right to keep his own toy. “You handled this perfectly…as a kindergarten teacher, thank you for showing that child respect, calm voice, and validating his feelings. Bravo!” one person wrote. Another added, “Sharing is caring, but it’s not an obligation.”

Some viewers argued that children should be encouraged to share their toys, but that opinion faced disagreement from others. “The amount of people in the comments thinking kids shouldn’t bring toys in public if they don’t want to share is blowing my mind. This isn’t daycare or a play date where they know this kid, it’s a total stranger. Teaching boundaries is important,” one person wrote. Another added, “Normalize teaching your kids to accept ‘NO.’”

The video sparked a conversation about the importance of teaching children to understand and respect personal boundaries. It also led to discussions about whether kids should be expected to always share their toys with strangers or whether they should have the choice to say no when it comes to their belongings.
