Wildfire smoke has become an all-too-familiar sight across parts of the U.S., and Illinois is among the latest states feeling its effects. A Reddit user shared a photo of Chicago shrouded in smoke on Thursday morning, prompting many commenters to compare the city’s eerie grey haze to a horror video game or movie.

Reddit user BDMCX shared a picture today, taken from what appears to be a Skydeck camera overlooking Chicago. As you can see from the picture, which was taken around 9am today, the whole city is covered in smoke, which is due to the wildfires that have been affecting a lot of the states in the country, including Illinois.

While some cities have suffered more than others, those living in Chicago have started saying that it feels different, as some people have been having trouble breathing or even performing some of their daily tasks. Some have even said that the city is in a terrible state now because of the combination of smoke and heat, which has made it unbearable for many.

Fortunately, the image has also raised awareness of the situation. Residents have begun sharing their own experiences, along with tips for those who have to work outdoors while air quality remains poor. For now, it’s unclear how long the smoky conditions will last.

Illinois Redditors Are Concerned About Wildfires Affecting Citizens

Since several Chicagoans woke up to the smell of smoke and then had to deal with it actually filling their lungs, some have started to share a few tips, especially to those who have to travel across the city.

“Wear a mask, everyone. Close your windows.“

“Had to wear a mask when commuting today.”

A few other Redditors have pointed out that this bleak landscape is unprecedented and that people have not seen it in Chicago.

“Looks like something out of a video game. Silent Hill: Chicago edition.“

“It literally smells like charred forest outside… combined with the extreme heat, it has a distinct apocalyptic feel.“

Ultimately, many residents are urging others to wear a mask when heading outside or, if possible, stay indoors while air quality remains poor. Unfortunately, with the wildfires continuing to spread, it may be some time before conditions improve.
