Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker Draws Backlash After Launching Food Assistance Program: ‘Could Have Been Spent on Getting People Jobs’

Conservatives aren’t singing his praises.

Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker announced on X on Friday that a new state program would be launched beginning next month to assist households impacted by federal cuts to food assistance. He said the Trump administration and Republicans have made “life harder” for struggling families by prioritizing policies that increase their financial burden.

While groceries, gas, and utilities continue to rise, Trump and Republicans decided to strip food assistance from Illinoisans.

“Groceries have faced the biggest price jump in over 50 years, thanks to Donald Trump’s tariffs and trade wars,” the governor said. “And at the same time, he’s slashing food assistance for children and families most in need.”

Pritzker said he does not plan to let any affected Illinois household starve and has created the FRESH Program, where eligible families would automatically receive a $400 payment starting Aug. 1 without needing to fill out any application or paperwork.

“Here in Illinois, we’re fighting back so people don’t go hungry,” Pritzker declared. “We’re helping families in Illinois with rising costs as best we can. We won’t back down.”

Who Qualifies for the Payment

According to the Illinois Department of Human Services, the FRESH Program provides a one-time $400 payment for each eligible household member whose SNAP benefits were reduced or ended after they failed to meet the federal work requirement.

The agency said the program is only available to households that exhausted the federal three-month time limit and lost their SNAP benefits on or after May 1, 2026, and have not since regained or had their benefits reinstated.

Eligible recipients are notified automatically, and the money is loaded onto their Illinois Link Cards.

Critics Say Illinois Does Not Need Another Assistance Program

Critics responding to the Illinois governor’s announcement argued that the new program fails to address the state’s broader economic problems.

“$400 won’t fix anything, if you want real change then lower all taxes and you’ll see how you’ll make Illinois great again,” one X user advised. Another suggested, “How about launching a Tax Rebate Program so working people can kept [sic] their money from Greedy Politicians?”

They also questioned whether the money could have been used to create jobs. “I wonder if this 70 Million could have been spent on getting people jobs? Or how about utilizing it to keep CPS teachers from getting laid off?” one commenter wrote. Another claimed, “If these ‘teens’ had jobs they wouldn’t be in the streets but you don’t want that because the only way to keep stealing is to keep people dependent on you.”

Some netizens also defended the Trump administration while blaming Democrats for the state’s economic problems.

“No, Trump and the Republicans took steps toward ending FRAUD in the SNAP program. The people who were affected are the ILLEGALS that do not belong here,” one person commented. Someone else claimed, “The only places where things like gas and groceries are so unaffordable are all democrat ran states and cities.“

Most netizens on X remained unconvinced the program would benefit those it was intended to help. Some even alleged, without providing evidence, that funds from the initiative would ultimately be diverted to undocumented immigrants.
