An influencer in Illinois sparked backlash after sharing a video in which he approached a black man sitting with a white man and a woman to “check on” him, but the group did not welcome the interaction.
The video touched on a broader debate that has gained attention online. Some people argue that black individuals should check on other black people when they see them with white people, saying the goal is to make sure they are safe or not in an uncomfortable situation. Others strongly disagree, arguing that doing so encourages assumptions about strangers based solely on race and unfairly portrays interracial friendships, relationships, or everyday interactions as suspicious. The differing perspectives have fueled ongoing discussions about race, bias, and how people interpret public interactions.
The video began with the influencer approaching a table where a black man was sitting with two white companions. “Hey Black king, you okay?” he asked as he extended his hand for a handshake. The man smiled and shook his hand, seemingly not expecting what would happen next.
The interaction escalated when the influencer told the man that he wanted to make sure the “white people” at the table were not harassing him. One of the companions then responded by saying that his father was black and asked the influencer to leave. When the influencer refused, the black man told him to leave using a racial slur and referred to the other man as his “boy,” making it clear they were friends.
The man then stood up to confront the influencer over his assumption that his friends were harassing him. Despite the tense exchange, the friend tried to calm the situation rather than let it escalate. “De-escalate,” he repeatedly told the influencer, who continued to remain at the table instead of walking away.
At that point, the man walked toward the influencer as the confrontation escalated. “I’m still here,” the influencer said as he refused to leave. “Keep talking and you won’t be,” the man replied, appearing to threaten him. The influencer insisted that he was only checking on him, but the man responded that they did not know each other. “I’m sitting with them for a reason. I know them,” he said, making it clear that he was there voluntarily with his friends.
The argument continued as the man’s friend repeatedly tried to de-escalate the situation. The influencer and the man continued yelling at each other while the influencer refused to leave. Standing between them, the friend calmly urged the influencer not to make assumptions, saying, “Don’t judge somebody by the way he looks.”
The friend then repeated that his father was black and asked the influencer whether he would leave if he showed him a photo proving it. The influencer agreed, and the friend pulled out his phone and showed him a picture that he said was of his father.
The situation eventually de-escalated. The influencer hugged both the black man and his friend before saying that he loved his “black brother.” The man also thanked him for checking on him. Despite the cordial ending, many viewers still criticized the influencer, arguing that he should not have assumed the man needed help based solely on the race of the people he was with.
Viewers Attack Illinois Influencer Over Confronting Black Man and His Friends
The video sparked reactions online. Many viewers criticized the Illinois influencer, arguing that he unnecessarily harassed a group of friends who were minding their own business. “This moron interrupts people minding their own business because he ‘needs’ to make sure the black guy is safe around Whites. Typical obnoxious behavior from a trouble making thug,” one person wrote. Others interpreted the interaction differently, with one commenter claiming the black man was not being treated as an equal by his friends after one of them tried to calm him by briefly holding his chin. “Got calmed down like he was their [expletive] pit bull. Embarrassing,” they wrote.
Other viewers argued that the influencer’s approach was itself discriminatory because it assumed something was wrong based solely on the race of the people at the table. “You can’t be looking out for your brother while throwing some racist card at people who are having a friendly sit out,” one person wrote. Others defended the influencer’s intentions, with one commenter arguing, “So how would you have checked on the countless black people that die or go missing during seemingly innocent event usually involving a majority white group and either dead missing or hurt black person and nobody at the event knows what happens..[expletive] happens too often for stupidity.”
While the confrontation ultimately ended peacefully, the online debate showed little sign of doing the same, with viewers continuing to argue over whether checking on a stranger in that situation was an act of concern or an example of racial stereotyping.
