A man in Dixon, Illinois wrote a Facebook post expressing his intent to protest local data centers. Later, police arrived to arrest him.

In the encounter at his home, the man spoke with two police officers who had arrived at the scene. He asked them whether they were there because he had been trying to organize a community protest. The protest was against a local representative who supported the construction of data centers. He also claimed that the data centers were owned by an out-of-state company.

The man continued filming the officers and asked for their names and badge numbers, which they provided. He then stated, “I have a First Amendment right to protest.” The man later added that he believed he was allowed to organize a protest on a public road. He also said he had previously sent an email to the representative. In addition, he emphasized that he “never made a threat” toward him.

The man then accused the officers of coming to his property in an attempt to intimidate him. One of the officers responded, stating that a threat had been made, despite the man denying it. The officer claimed the man had referenced the safety of the representative’s children. The man, however, insisted that he had not made any such comment and denied threatening the representative’s children.

The man clarified that what he actually said was that if the representative valued the safety of his children, he would not try to “ruin” the environment the children are being raised in. “That isn’t a threat,” the man said. “I’m allowed to say that if someone cares about their kids, they shouldn’t destroy the community that their kids is being raised in,” he continued.

He then told the officer to pull up and read his post, saying it would show exactly what he had written. The officer responded that they and the state attorney disagreed with his interpretation, stating that they believed a threat had been made. The officer then informed the man that he was being charged with “stalking and intimidation.”

The man reacted in disbelief at what the officers were telling him, saying that he had never stalked the representative. The video ended with the same officer informing him that he was going to be arrested and asking him to stop his live stream.

Viewers Defend Illinois Man After Police Encounter

The video sparked reactions online. Many viewers expressed shock over the situation, particularly regarding the charges brought against the Illinois man following his opposition to local data center plans. “This should alarm everyone. The FIRST AMENDMENT is under attack,” one person wrote. Another commented, “Okay folks are you aware of the precedent that this sets to arrest this guy for what he said that if the man cared about his children he would not try to destroy the community they were being raised in. They charged him for that? [Expletive] is going on in this country. We are lost !!”

More people opposed what happened as one person said, “How the hell is this being allowed? The problem is that a judge signed off on this [expletive] because they have immunity. They are not afraid of anything because it’s almost impossible to remove a judge or hold them accountable because of their immunity. I’m sick and tired of these tyrannical judges abusing their authority. They feel invincible and above the law. They used a loophole in the law to harass an innocent citizen expressing is first amendment rights. We must draw a line and remove the immunity from these judges once and for all. It allows them to abuse their power because they don’t fear repercussions for their actions. This type of abuse of our constitutional rights should not be tolerated.”

The video sparked discussion about free speech and how citizens interpret their right to express political opposition, particularly regarding local development projects. It also led to broader conversations online about accountability in public decision-making and concerns over proposed data center developments in the community.
