One Connecticut restaurant worker found out the hard way that being a little too open at work can come at a cost, in this case, her job. Reddit user Sunnyy_bunnyyy shared her story on r/jobs, explaining that she’d worked at the restaurant for over a year and had recently been training a new employee. During the training, she decided to tell the new person something she might have been better off keeping to herself, as the newbie wasn’t someone who could keep a secret.
“I was telling her that there are things in the restaurant that need a lot of improvement, and that she won’t make much money working morning shifts but nights are much better,” Sunny recalled. After that conversation, the new girl decided to tell that to another worker, who happened to be the cousin of the owner. After the owner caught wind of it, they immediately fired Sunny, without warning or notice.
“She didn’t even have the decency to call me and ask ME what happened and why she decided to fire me because of something she heard through a game of telephone,” exclaimed Sunny. If getting fired wasn’t bad enough, OP also says the owner decided to withhold tips that were rightfully hers from a wedding she helped with not too long ago. Apparently, the tips were handled in a shady way involving splitting the money with the cousin without Sunny’s knowledge or say-so.
Reddit Agreed That OP Should Have Kept Quiet About Her Opinions at Work
Redditors were both sympathetic but critical of Sunny’s actions. On the one hand, the restaurant owner handled her termination unfairly and communicated poorly. On the other hand, she shouldn’t have trusted a newcomer with criticism of the business. “Although I’m not saying you’re wrong – after being in the working world for over 20 years I’ve learned that coworkers aren’t your friend regardless of how friendly they seem,” remarked a commenter.
Another Redditor added to what was said in a reply: “It’s not that everyone is out to get you, it’s more so that words spreads and something will always unintentionally get back to someone.” One user supported Sunny’s behavior but added that she probably should have kept quiet, saying, “You didn’t deserve to be fired. But you didn’t stand a chance, sadly.” She responded, “Employers need to be held at a higher standard and I’m sick of them treating us like disposable garbage.”
Some people urged her to consider legal action against the owner for withholding her earnings. Fortunately, Sunny took the advice, and her now-former employer bent. “I texted my boss and told her if I’m not paid the amount I am owed by tomorrow I’m filing a report with DOL. She just texted me this morning and said they are sending me a check via mail for the full amount I am owed,” OP triumphantly concluded.
