Nintendo showcased a surprise Indie Direct today with the August Indie World Showcase stream. Although Hollow Knight fans still have to hold their breath (again) for an update on the Silksong expansion, today’s show is packed with exciting news for indie fans. From 11 new titles coming between late this year and 2022 to seven games you can download and play right now, here are all the announcements in Nintendo’s August Indie World Showcase stream.
1. Jet, Set, and Go Bomb Rush Cyberfunk Next Year
Although Beat has been showing up as a cameo in several SEGA titles, it seems the Sonic creators haven’t any intention to revive the Jet Set Radio series. Thankfully, indie developer Team Reptile is ready to take up that mantle instead. Featuring soundtracks by Hideki Naganuma, grind the streets, tag the walls, and face off against cops or rival bombers in Bomb Rush Cyberfunk. The game will be released to Switch as a timed console exclusive sometime in 2022.
2. Astroneer – Nintendo Indie World Showcase August Trailer
The popular multiplayer sandbox/base-building game Astroneer is coming to Switch in January 2022. Set during the 25th century Intergalactic Age of Discovery, the Astroneers are sent to explore and reshape distant worlds, risking their lives in harsh environments to unearth rare discoveries and unlock the mysteries of the universe. Work together to build custom bases above or below ground, create vehicles, and use terrain to create anything you can imagine.
3. Set Sail with FAR: Changing Tides in 2022
From Okomotive, the studio behind atmospheric adventure FAR: Lone Sails, comes a new entry into the FAR universe. Captain your very own rickety ship to discover the wonders of a flooded world filled with ruins and mystery. Over and under the water, hunt for precious fuel and salvage, devise solutions for intricate obstacles, and unearth forgotten relics lost to time. FAR: Changing Tides will launch sometime in early 2022.
4. Go Green With LumbearJack Next Year
Only you, as Jack the humble LumbearJack, can help mother nature to return what is hers. Use your trusty ax and save the environment by chopping and recycling every man-made thing in your path in an attempt to thwart the sinister plans of up-and-coming industrial giant Evil Works through real-time physics puzzles. This cute puzzle game will be released sometime in 2022.
5. Get Tactical in Metal Slug Tactics, Launching in 2022
Rock-it lawnchair! Next year, Metal Slug will be back in a completely new form. Still presented with highly detailed pixel art and upbeat chiptune soundtracks, this time you take command of Marco, Tarma, Eri, and Fio in a dynamic tactical isometric RPG with rogue-like elements.
6. This September, Go Eastward
Launching as a timed console exclusive on September 16, 2021, Eastward is the latest title from Chucklefish, the developer behind Starbound and Wargroove. Journey through society on the brink of collapse and venture into the unknown in Eastward. Pre-order on Nintendo eShop is now open.
7. Tetris Effect: Connected – Nintendo Indie World Showcase August Trailer
After the Xbox, PC, and PS4 launch, Switch owners will also be able to experience the hypnotic Tetris Effect: Connected on October 8, 2021. This version adds a robust all-new cross-platform co-op and competitive multiplayer expansion to the already huge variety of innovative single-player modes. It really is a Tetris title like you’ve never seen it, heard it, or felt it before.
8. TOEM A Photo Adventure August Nintendo Indie World Showcase Announcement
Described as a “wholesome adventure game about taking photos”, in TOEM you are tasked to solve problems and puzzles by snapping photos while you make your way through a relaxing, hand-drawn, monochromatic landscape inspired by the Scandinavian countryside. This laidback title is planned to be released in Fall 2021.
9. Fall and Get Back Up Again in Gang Beasts This… Fall
Customize your character and fight local and online enemies or be ready to get ganged up by the gangs of Beef City with friends in this silly physics-based multiplayer party game. Gang Beast is coming to the Switch in Fall 2021.
10. Survive the Shovel Knight Pocket Dungeon This Holiday Season
From Yacht Club game is a new title in the Shovel Knight series. Described as a “dungeon-crawler and puzzler hybrid”, in Pocket Dungeon you can play as the titular Shovel Knight and other characters. Fighting against both new and familiar faces, group up enemies to unleash a massive chain of attacks and loot items to survive and escape from the pocket dungeon. The game is planned to be launched in winter 2021.
11. Spend a Hundred Days and Reap the Fruit of Your Labor Later This Year
Be ready to take charge of a small and abandoned winery when Hundred Days is released to the Switch in the holiday season of 2021. From selecting the types of vine you want to grow to naming your final product, every decision of the challenging business of winemaking will rest solely in your hands.
12. Loop Hero – Nintendo Indie World Showcase August Trailer
This year’s indie rogue-like sensation is finally ready to make its way to the Switch this holiday season. The time-bending Lich has thrown the world into never-ending looping chaos. Rebuild the world and beat the Lich by using a deck of mystical cards to place enemies, buildings, and terrain to train other brave heroes.
