Spoilers for Infinity War (Movie) and Infinity Wars Prime #1 (Comics)
Thanos rocked the entire MCU thanks to his actions in Infinity War, killing off some of Marvel’s most beloved characters. But while that may have shocked the movie universe, it may not even hold a candle to what is about to happen in the comicverse if Infinity Wars Prime #1 has anything to say about it.
At last week’s San Diego Comic-Con, Infinity Wars Prime #1 writer Gerry Duggan revealed the newest arc in the saga would change the fate of the universe. The Mad Titan is dead. But who killed him?
Without spoiling too much, all you need to know is that the character responsible for the act is a sinister presence known only as Requiem. Thanos met his fate after being stabbed through the back with a cosmic sword by the new villain, who has a feminine build. As a result, speculation has begun to run rampant as to what femme fatale it could be from the Marvel Universe.
The most likely candidate is the less loved daughter of Thanos, Nebula. In the movies the character is played by Doctor Who’s Karen Gillan, existing as an antagonist for the majority of it. Like many characters, she wants to kill the Mad Titan, but her motives lie in the physical torture she put him through.
Gamora doesn’t seem like a far-fetched guess either, though she has been aligned primarily as a hero throughout. The character could also be someone unrelated. Either way, the unknown future of the Infinity Wars series is exciting now that Thanos is out of the picture.
Interestingly enough, this isn’t Thanos’ first death in the comics. So far he has been killed by Adam Warlock (Turned into a Stone actually), Drax, Dr. Doom, and has even been abandoned in the Cancerverse.
There is no telling as to whether he will make a return, but for now, it doesn’t seem likely.
Marvel’s Infinity Wars #1 is out now.
