Horror fans had every reason to be cautious heading into Insidious: Out of the Further. While the franchise has remained popular over the years, critics haven’t exactly been kind to some of its more recent entries. That makes the first wave of reviews for the latest film all the more surprising, with many calling it one of the strongest Insidious movies in years.
Right now, the sixth installment in James Wan’s Insidious franchise currently holds a 67 per cent critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes, putting it among the best-reviewed films in the series and its strongest critical showing since the 2010 original. So, what are critics actually saying? Here’s a look at some of the early reviews.
Dread Central (4/5) – Awarding the film 4 out of 5 stars, Dread Central called Insidious: Out of the Further one of the franchise’s strongest entries, praising its inventive scares, emotional core and striking visuals. “The latest entry in Blumhouse’s supernatural Insidious franchise is an impressive return to form that features some of the series’ best scares and a solid emotional core.”
/Film (7/10) – /Film praised Insidious: Out of the Further for its carefully paced scares and entertaining blend of horror and humor, arguing that its jump scares remain effective even when audiences know they’re coming. “It’s paced so meticulously well that even though well-seasoned horror fans know something’s going to pop out at you, it’s still a great time when it happens.”
ComingSoon (7/10) – ComingSoon wrote Insidious: Out of the Further proves that the long-running horror series still has plenty to offer, highlighting Jacob Chase’s inventive scares, emotional themes and fresh ideas despite being the franchise’s sixth installment. “Insidious: Out of the Further demonstrates that there is still gas in the tank for this franchise.”
Whether Insidious: Out of the Further can maintain its strong early momentum will ultimately depend on how audiences respond once it reaches theaters tomorrow. For now, though, the latest trip into The Further has given horror fans something they haven’t seen from the franchise in quite a while: critics who are largely recommending an Insidious sequel. The film arrives exclusively in theaters on August 21.
