Software is like magic; it reveals the true power of the hardware. When Nvidia announced DLSS, the gamers were surprised by their solution to get more FPS in the games. With the improvements in AI, it became possible to make hardware more efficient. AMD is the second company that uses the benefits of AI; they have a similar answer to DLSS; the name is FSR. Now, Intel is making the third move and announcing their new software acceleration XeSS, and it’s narrow reachable.
XeSS is Intel’s Software Answer to Nvidia’s DLSS
This became a surprise launch for everyone. Intel didn’t make an announcement about their upcoming supersampling solution. As the others do, XeSS helps the Intel graphics card to get more FPS with the lowest quality decreasing as possible. It’s only available for Shadow of the Tomb Raider with complete support. Tomb Raider is a great choice to show how XeSS makes the graphics look fresh. As you see, XeSS helps a lot to make graphics more realistic. This must be the quality mode that helps to improve the look instead of the performance. You can check the performance mode’s FPS difference from this tweet.
The manufacturers call supersampling or upscaling this technology. The software downscales the resolution first and fills the pixels with machine learning. That requires much less processing power and helps the GPU. The game quality might decrease slightly, but most gamers don’t notice the difference. Supersampling software also offers you options like quality mode or performance mode. You can choose whatever you want; you’ll keep getting more frame rates compared to the non-supersampling mode.
We’re hoping to see more attractive moves from Intel soon. They’re more focused on the graphics card than ever, and it would be great if there were a third rival in the market. Competition is always a good thing for the customers.
