  • Why Are There Rumors About Roblox Shutting Down?

Roblox has been growing steadily since its launch in 2006. There are currently over 100 million monthly players and millions of developers using the platform to create games and experiences for all ages. From horror and anime games to roleplaying experiences and shooters, you name it, Roblox has got it. However, some rumors have been circulating, saying that the whole Roblox server will shut down in 2024. Sounds a bit of a stretch, but we’ll break down the reason why it isn’t happening quickly below.

No, Roblox is not going to shut down this year in 2024 or any time soon considering how lucrative the platform is. During the second quarter of 2024, the company announced it raked in $893.5 million in revenue, up by 31% from last year. You can get 90 Bugatti Chiron Profilee with that amount of dough. Player numbers are also growing by 21% year-over-year, reaching 79.5 million daily users on average — more than twice Steam’s 37 million concurrent users.

Plus, according to data compiled by Backlinko, 3 million developers have created 5.5 million games on the platform and the numbers are likely to keep growing. Combined, Roblox developers are estimated to have made over $701 million in the first 9 months of 2023 alone.

If a business that has to report its earnings to shareholders and investors said everything’s fine, then nothing is to be worried about. All things considered, rest assured that you will be able to keep enjoying many old and new Roblox adventures for years to come.

Every year, gossip or speculation about Roblox ceasing operation always crops up. While it’s reasonable for people to be concerned about their favorite game, the rumors mainly come from unfounded or misguided ideas.

More often than not, falsehoods were spread by disgruntled players who’ve had difficulty adjusting to new updates or being banned. When that happens, they will try to pass on a hoax about hacker attacks that will shut down the whole server at a specific time.

Sometimes, players also become overly concerned when games are abandoned by their developers and no longer receive updates. Especially younger ones who might not be able to tell the difference between their favorite experiences and Roblox as a platform.

Naturally, connection issues will happen for games and services that require a constant connection to the internet and their servers. Roblox itself is prone to such issues, such as Error Code 103. When inaccessibility occurs, it could further fuel speculation that something bigger is going down with the game.

Lastly, more fuel to the fire is the perceived budget deficit of the company. In 2023 alone, Roblox paid out $740.8 million to its creators. People see this as a sign that the company might be unable to keep up with the expenses and will finally shut down.

However, that theory didn’t take into account how much revenue and/or profit Roblox made in the first place. Not to mention how much cut the company takes for every transaction that occurs in the platform or through Robux. Other big gaming companies, like Sony and Microsoft, too have been able to manage their budget deficits despite bigger losses.
