Marvel is often tightlipped about its future projects beyond some casting announcements, but one of its most mysterious movies has new details. A story premise Thunderbolts, which has a script being revised by The Bear showrunner Joanna Calo, sounds a lot like Suicide Squad or any other story with people going on a suicide mission.
The showrunner of the popular FX cooking drama will revise the script from Beef creator Lee Sung Jin. He replaced the previous writer, Eric Pearson, who wrote Black Widow and Thor: Ragnarok. It is unknown how much will change with this latest revision.
Thunderbolts Story Premise Brings a New Level of Stakes
The Hollywood Reporter published a massive report on how Marvel is “retooling” the MCU. Among the changes being made, we got a hint at what we can expect from the story of Thunderbolts as the script gets a final pass. The film “centers on villains and antiheroes going on a mission that was supposed to end with their deaths.”
It is not an original idea, but something that could be a new taste for the MCU to help give it a much-needed boost as Marvel’s reputation has dipped post-Endgame. We have seen films like Suicide Squad (both the 2016 and 2021 movies), Kong: Skull Island, and other films in which a group of people embark on a dangerous mission that leads to people being picked off one by one.
Not much is known about what to expect about the story of Thunderbolts beyond this latest update. The film will star plenty of familiar faces, with Sebastian Stan returning as Bucky Barnes/The Winter Soldier, Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova/Black Widow, David Harbour as Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian, Wyatt Russell as John Walker/U.S. Agent, Olga Kurylenko as Antonia Dreykov/Taskmaster, Hannah John-Kamen as Ava Starr/Ghost, and Julia Louis-Dryfus as Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine. Harrison Ford has since joined as Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross. Geraldine Viswanathan replaced The Bear star Ayo Edebiri for an unknown role, and Steven Yeun was replaced by Lewis Pullman as Sentry.
Production will begin in March for Thunderbolts. It will be released on May 2, 2025.
