The Pitt County, North Carolina, Sheriff’s Office is facing mounting questions from local news outlets and citizens after revealing, more than a month after the fact, that bomb-detection K-9 Chili died from being left in a hot patrol car, disclosing the June 11 death only on July 21. The delayed disclosure, a redacted internal investigation, and confirmation that the K-9’s vehicle lacked heat-monitoring technology have fueled calls for more transparency and a full investigation from the department.
In a post shared on X, citizen outrage poured out as answers about the death hit a fever pitch. Chilli, a bomb-detection K-9 donated to the department through a federal program, joined the sheriff’s office in May 2025. The high temperature in Greenville that day reached 99 degrees. The department said the deputy handling Chilli has served the county for years but declined to name him, citing North Carolina’s confidential personnel records statute.

According to WCT112, the sheriff’s office said it launched an internal investigation the day after Chilli’s death and concluded it was accidental, but has declined to release the timeline of events, how long Chilli was in the vehicle, or who conducted the investigation. Officials confirmed the deputy’s K-9 vehicle was not equipped with a Hot-N-Pop system, heat-monitoring technology some of the department’s other vehicles already have, citing budget constraints.
