J. Jonah Jameson has always been a thorn in Spider-Man’s side. While he causes the wall-crawler nothing but pain, the Daily Bugle Editor in Chief is an important character in the comics, TV shows, and movies. In Sam Raimi’s original live-action trilogy, J.K. Simmons played him flawlessly. He was so great, in fact, that he reprised the role in the mid-credits scene for 2019’s Spider-Man: Far From Home. The character wasn’t in The Amazing Spider-Man series, so fans were happy to see him return. This is especially the case given how well the actor fits into the role.

While appearing on People TV’s Couch Surfing, Simmons revealed that he’s signed on to reprise the role in multiple sequels. However, when asked if fans should expect him to pop up in the next entry, Simmons said he didn’t know if he’d appear. Despite having a contract for several sequels, the studio isn’t obligated to use him. But he is clearly very grateful for the role that helped him find mainstream success.

It’s great to have the opportunity, as these things evolve, to be one of the holdovers from the previous version.”

The Oscar-winning actor also talked about his “nerve-wracking” audition for the role. Since the scene was Green Goblin attacking Jameson, that’s completely understandable. Far From Home was his return to the character in live-action. But he’s voiced the role in plenty of animated shows including Ultimate Spider-Man, Hulk and the Agents of S.M.A.S.H., and even a pretty good parody on The Simpsons.

Simmons’ performance as J. Jonah Jameson is near-perfect. With the way Far From Home ended, it would be disappointing for a sequel not to follow that thread. Here’s hoping Marvel and Sony give fans what they want. Just how likely that might be is really anyone’s.
