Quite understandably there’s some confusion around the different choices when confronting the character Bastien in Jagged Alliance 3. Bastien is a prominent antagonist you can come across in the game. You can potentially meet him twice in Jagged Alliance 3, and each time, you’re given a set of choices to decide when confronting him. Your decisions will have consequences for the rest of the game. Depending on what you choose with Bastien, you may be unable to recruit Pierre to your army in Jagged Alliance 3.

Every Jagged Alliance 3 Bastien Choice in First Encounter

Bastien is the head of a small gang affiliated with The Legion, the enemy army you are fighting. Bastien is a boastful man with a red jersey shirt and a gold dollar symbol necklace. He can act friendly towards you, especially in your second encounter, depending on the choices you make.

You first meet Bastien in Jagged Alliance 3 on the beach at Sector I1. When first confronting him, the game will give you three options to decide. Some options are only available if you have a certain stat amount.

Kill Him: If you choose to kill Bastien, the fort defenses decreases. You will also gain 150 XP and 10 Loyalty with Ernie. However, you may be unable to recruit Pierre later if you kill Bastien.
Don’t Kill Him: If you spare Bastien, you can meet him at H3 and learn more about The Legion from him.
Sweet Talk: You convince Bastien to stand down, and he will reward you with three diamonds. But you can only pick this option if you have high wisdom.

Pierre is an enemy soldier you can potentially recruit later in Jagged Alliance 3. He will be fortified at Fort Leau Bleu. The fort is heavily secure; you can lower its defenses and confront Pierre. He won’t join your army if Bastien’s dead, so it’s best to spare Bastien in your first encounter.

Every Bastien Choice in Second Encounter

You meet Bastien again in a camp located in H3. He will threaten you and your team, demanding a ransom to pass through his camp. There are four outcomes you can decide that will determine Bastien’s fate.

Pay Up: You pay Bastien’s ransom of $1,000. Paying up will give you 150XP.
Threaten: Threaten Bastien, and he will hand over all his weapons, plus 150XP, 5 Ernie Loyalty points, $115, and diamonds. His weapon loot includes an AK-47, MP40, and ammo. You can only threaten him if you have high enough wisdom.
Trick Him: You can convince Bastien’s men to turn on him, rewarding you 300XP and removing Bastien from the fort’s defenses. This option is only possible if you have Fox in your army.
Kill Him: Same deal as the first encounter. If you kill Bastien, you receive 150XP and 15 Ernie Loyalty points.

If you spare Bastien again, he will start smuggling goods for you at the Refugee Camp in E9. You can decide Bastien’s fate again if you talk to him at the Refuge Camp. You can decide to kill him once and for all, but you won’t receive anything.
