Road House, the action-packed remake of the 1989 film about an ex-UFC fighter, has officially dethroned John Cena’s new comedy Ricky Stanicky on Amazon Prime Video’s Top Ten list, according to FlixPatrol‘s statistics. Doug Liman’s action/thriller tells the underdog story of Elwood Dalton, a former UFC fighter who takes a job as a bouncer at a roadhouse in Florida, only to run into some unsavory types while fighting on the frontlines.
Despite releasing earlier this month, Road House has seen a massive surge in popularity on Prime Video. In fact, it rose to the number one spot in so many countries simultaneously that it quickly stole the title from John Cena’s Ricky Stanicky, a comedy about three friends who hire an actor to play an imaginary friend to blame their problems on.
Road House Takes Down the Competition
Liman is known for directing successful action flicks such as The Bourne Identity, Edge of Tomorrow, and Mr. & Mrs. Smith. As for Gyllenhaal, his biggest achievements include Brokeback Mountain, Donnie Darko, and the more recent Spider-Man: Far From Home.
Road House entered in at number one for several countries, but most notably the U.K., Australia, Brazil, Germany, Italy, Hong Kong, Mexico, and more.
Gyllenhaal is the son of director Stephen Gyllenhaal and screenwriter Naomi Foner. He began acting as a young child, but his career didn’t get off the ground until his titular role in Donnie Darko in 2001. He went on to appear in Zodiac, alongside Mark Ruffalo and Robert Downey Jr., and Denis Villeneuve’s thrillers, Prisoners and Enemy.
He is the recipient of countless Best Actors awards and a past nominee for one Academy Award, two British Academy Film Awards, two Golden Globe Awards, and three Tony Awards.
For the role of Elwood Dalton, Gyllenhaal had to consume a diet focused on weight gain and building mass. He worked with trainer Jason Walsh for more than a year to undergo an intense workout plan to build and maintain muscle mass.
His co-star Conor McGregor is a retired mixed martial artist and professional boxer, who only recently accepted his first real acting role as Knox, one of the ruffians who challenges Elwood at the roadhouse.
