As James Gunn lays the groundwork for the future of DC, things are still unclear for some actors. Case in point, Jason Momoa has opened up about his future as Aquaman in the new DCU. Based on how things are looking, the next standalone film for his aquatic superhero could be his final time.

Jason Momoa on His Future as Aquaman in the Revamped DCU

Speaking to Entertainment Tonight, the Game of Thrones alum spoke about his love for the character as he wants to continue saving Atlantis and the rest of the world from bad guys. While he recognizes that he has no power in the matter, he wants to continue his time as Arthur Curr “for a long time.”

Many factors go into a studio wanting to move forward with a sequel, especially when you have the Guardians of the Galaxy director running the creative side of said studio. For Jason Momoa, he views the future of his time as Aquaman contingent on whether “the audience loves it.” As of now, he thinks it is “not looking good.”

The truth of it is, I mean, if the audience loves it, then there’s a possibility. But right now, Iโ€™m like, ‘It’s not looking too good.’

Only a handful of actors are confirmed to return to the DCU. James Gunn will bring back John Cena (Peacemaker), Viola Davis (Amanda Waller), Xolo Maridueรฑa (Blue Beetle), and Vigilante (Freddie Stroma). For now, he is mostly focused on Superman: Legacy, which will kick off the new universe, so it’s uncertain if any DCEU actors will come back, whether that is to reprise their current role or for something new.

Jason Momoa has reprised his role as Aquaman six times, some of which were for brief, uncredited roles. His time as a major character has been in Justice League, his first standalone film, and for his seventh time reprising the role for The Lost Kingdom.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom will be released on December 22. If it makes money and fits in with the vision of the director-turned-co-CEO, then we could see more of this interpretation of the character in the future. Time will tell.
