Jennifer Lopez finally breaks her silence on the end of Bennifer 2.0 and the vitriol faced while navigating Ben Affleck’s divorce. Jennifer and Ben ushered in 2024 as a power couple. However, things headed south quickly, with keen-eyed fans noting the duo were fast drifting apart. After months of speculations, news of their split eventually went public, offering a confirmation of what many had already foreseen.
Jennifer Lopez filed for divorce from Ben Affleck in August 2024, in what would be her fourth failed marriage. This left many pointing accusing fingers at the crooner, mostly blaming her for being unable to keep a marriage, ruining things with her alcohol brand, or being too desperate to embrace the concept of being in love. In a new interview with comedian Nikki Glaser for Interview Magazine, the star admitted she was well aware of the general tendency toward shifting the blame her way, and the resulting negativity.
Jennifer Lopez Breaks Silence on Hurtful Post-Divorce Comments
While she admittedly learned to shut out such comments as things that didn’t matter, she described them as hurtful nonetheless. Addressing the negative opinions of her and the resulting media storm, the 55-year-old divulged,
“I know that everything that’s being written and said about me, and all the conjecture of who I am as a person, is not who I am. I learned that a long time ago. And social media, because it came along after I had been in the public eye for a while, I don’t take it as seriously as everybody else.”
Going further, Jennifer Lopez explained that despite the general consensus on her divorce from Ben Affleck, she remained true to who she was. For her, that meant being a good person and a good mom. The star explained that in the midst of the post-divorce storm, she knew her friends and family, and they knew and understood her in return. Everything else, she revealed, was just a part of the business. She divulged,
“Some people are going to love you and some are not going to understand you, and some people just want to hate you to hate you, and none of that really matters. What matters for me, as an artist, is doing work that inspires me and that I enjoy doing, whether it’s a huge commercial success or something that only touches one person that nobody ever f—ing even sees.”
How Jennifer Navigated the Media Storm Amid Fourth Divorce
The Can’t Get Enough crooner went on to address her haters, dismissing their negativity and trolling as a reflection of their own unhappiness. According to her, understanding that there would always exist “people that are probably unhappy in some way” remained a crucial part of surviving in showbiz. Thankfully, she’s learned to navigate that fact by turning her attention to things she felt most grateful for, including her twins Emme and Max.
Jennifer Lopez confirmed the end of her marriage to Ben Affleck with a divorce filing dated August 20, 2024, the would-have-been second anniversary of their second wedding. She listed their separation date as April 26, citing irreconcilable differences. Prior to the divorce filing, neither Jennifer nor her Gigli costar addressed the speculations running wild, despite spending their summer apart. Holding off on the split announcement left many hopeful the couple would eventually work things out, especially with their low-key approach. Sadly, that was not to be the case, as Bennifer 2.0 came crashing down harder than their first try at love.
