BAFTAs Backlash: Alan Cumming Says ‘We Were All Let Down’ After Onstage Slur

What was meant to be a night celebrating film, creativity, and inclusion turned into an unexpected controversy. During the Sunday, February 22 BAFTA Film Awards, host Alan Cumming faced a trauma-triggering moment when Tourette’s advocate John Davidson yelled expletives, while stars Michael B. Jordan and Delroy Lindo were onstage. A week later, Cumming issued a heartfelt apology, prompting widespread support.

Alan Cumming’s BAFTA Apology Addresses the Pain

“It’s now a week since I hosted the BAFTAs,” Cumming posted on Instagram, Monday, March 2, reflecting on the incident. “What should have been an evening celebrating creativity as well as diversity and inclusion turned into a trauma triggering [expletive].”

He acknowledged the harm caused to multiple communities: “I’m so sorry for all the pain Black people have felt at hearing that word echoed round the world. I’m so sorry the Tourettes community has been reminded of the lack of understanding and tolerance that abounds regarding their condition.”

Cumming also highlighted the broader lessons: “The only possible good that could come of this is a reminder that words matter, that rushing to judgment about things of which we are not fully cognisant is folly, that all trauma must be recognised and honoured.”

He addressed institutional failures, saying, “We were all let down by decisions made to both broadcast slurs and censor free speech,” before adding praise for artists, “Congratulations to all the artists whose work was overshadowed by the night’s events.”

Onstage during BAFTAs, he had already asked for understanding: “This can be part of how Tourette’s syndrome shows up for some people… Thanks for your understanding and for helping create a respectful space for everyone.”

Fans Rally Behind Cumming, Criticize BAFTA and BBC

The comment section of Cummung’s post lit up with support for him. One fan wrote, “Absolutely none of this was your fault and yet still you have provided the most eloquent apology of all 👏❤️.”

BAFTA and the BBC were targeted by others, “BBC knew what they were doing. Good on you for being kind and compassionate and better than them ❤️,” and “The @bbc are a joke. You sir, are a wonderful human.”

Fans also praised his inclusivity: “Good to see an apology that actually mentions the black community and references a slur being used, a lot of the others did not,” while another added, “I heard about this going down, and I was so worried about ya, man. You didn’t even do anything, and yet you’re apologizing. You truly have a kind soul. ❤️❤️”

Even amidst outrage, Cumming’s reflection and empathy have become the moment many remember from the night, a reminder of accountability, humanity, and the lasting impact of words.
