Jordan Peele is already a household name. Alongside his work in sketch comedy (Mad TV, Key & Peele), the 39-year-old is also an Oscar winner (Get Out, Best Original Screenplay), despite having only ever directed one film. Now he looks to take on another unique endeavor: a documentary about Lorena Bobbitt, the women who cut off her husband’s penis.
Amazon announced earlier this week that Monkeypaw Productions, Peele’s production company, would be creating the doc, detailing the events that occurred 25 years ago. The film, titled Lorena, will tell the story from Bobbitt’s perspective.
When it first occurred, most of the media that surrounded the incident painted Bobbit as an angry wife who went overkill with her revenge. As the documentary will tell, she claims there is much more to the one-sided story that was prevented.
“With this project, Lorena has a platform to tell her truth as well as engage in a critical conversation about gender dynamics, abuse, and her demand for justice,” Jordan Peele told the Daily Mail. “This is Lorena’s story and we’re honored to help her tell it.”
In 1994, she was found not guilty by reason of insanity for cutting off her husband’s penis and throwing it into a field. During the trial, Lorena claimed she was a victim of domestic violence, and that she cut off his genitals after he raped her.
Similar to the way that Get Out addressed a prominent social issue currently enveloping society with race relations, Lorena will certainly be an important film, as gender equality and the #Metoo movement are a highly discussed issue currently.
Lorena will be a four-part mini-doc and currently has no release date. For more information, be sure to check back to the site for updates, as well as all of your other nerdy news and needs!
