Microsoft is providing hundreds of hours of content this month. Speedrunners will be available for the entire month, starting June 1. This fast paced indie title puts players in the shoes of one of the several super-powered beings and has them face off against each other in a race to the finish line. Fall behind and you’ll be knocked out of the race, but use your abilities effectively and you’ll stay ahead of the game. Speedrunners also have a unique animated art style seemingly inspired by early Youtube animators such as Psychicpebbles and Speedo Sausage.
Watch Dogs is your second Xbox One game for the month. This modern day Assassin’s Creed/ Grand Theft Auto hybrid really missed the mark when it released back in 2014. Its gameplay was generic, its story was awful and its appearance was a serious downgrade to what was showcased years earlier. However, if you’re looking to pass some time and have a Games with Gold subscription, Watch Dogs isn’t a bad freebie.
Assassin’s Creed 3 and Dragon Age: Origins are your two Xbox 360/ Xbox One crossover games. Both are fine games but are definitely low points in their respective series. Assassin’s Creed 3 takes us back to colonial America and provides us with a dull and quiet protagonist. The fifth game in the series was certainly outclassed by its sequel Black Flag. While Dragon Age: Origins although an adequate game is nowhere near as good as its next-gen counterpart, Inquisition.
So we’re getting some big budget games this month, but each one of them is a low point in a relatively successful series. But that’s the good thing about Games with Gold. Play an entry in your favorite series, which you may not have wanted to fork out the big bucks for. As a side note, you can also get your hands on Phantom Dust’s DLC all month long, which would usually set you back $14.99.
