Former Vice President Kamala Harris spoke at the National Urban League Conference in Nashville, Tennessee, where she discussed revisiting how the Electoral College is currently structured.
A majority of commenters under a Reddit post that further discusses the remarks largely agree with Kamala Harris’ idea, while some questioned where this idea was during her 2024 presidential campaign. Other comments broadened the focus and remarked on revisiting other sections of the government as well.
Kamala Harris was present at the conference, where she spoke about potential methods to prevent Republican candidates from accusing Democrats of cheating.
One of these suggestions included changing how the Electoral College currently works. She allegedly said, “I know this is going to be controversial coming from me in particular — we need to revisit the Electoral College,” she said, which drew some claps. “We need to revisit the point of expanding the court to 13 justices, like we have 13 District Courts. We need to revisit, if they so want, statehood for Puerto Rico and D.C.”
For context, the Electoral College appoints 538 total electors, with each state getting a specific number based on total representation in Congress: two for its U.S. Senators plus its number of U.S. Representatives. The election uses a winner-take-all system where the candidate winning the state’s popular vote takes all of its electoral votes.
According to Pew Research, about 63% of Americans would prefer that presidential election wins were determined by who gets the most votes across the country. Only 35% of people wished to keep the Electoral College as-is.

Many commenters were in favor of former Presidential candidate Kamala Harris. The very top comment in the Reddit thread reads, “Louder for people in the back, please. Let’s get ranked choice voting!“
Others took the comments a step further and hoped for even more changes within the federal government. A commenter wrote, “Harris: ‘We need to revisit the Electoral College’….And the Senate….And the Supreme Court….And Ranked Choice Voting….And election financing…And proportional representation…And expanding democratic voices to US territories.”
Of course, some wondered where this push was during her 2024 campaign, with another person writing, “Where were all these popular and good ideas during her campaign? She was so afraid to rock the boat and was careful and political around every single issue to the point no one really knew what she stood for other than “Not being Trump”. DNC thought that would be enough, just like with Hilary, and got complacent.”
