Kevin Costner is opening up about the return of Yellowstone Season 5. The actor caused quite a stir when it was decided that he would not to return to the show, despite portraying the patriarch of the central family, John Dutton. After months of drama surrounding the beloved show, it was revealed that Costner wouldn’t return. Of course, rumors about his character began to circulate. On Sunday, the final episodes officially kicked off, and within the first few minutes, John Dutton’s fate was revealed to fans, and Costner. (Warning: Yellowstone spoilers below!)
On Monday, Kevin Costner gave an interview where he was asked about Yellowstone‘s return. The actor played it cool, and revealed that he actually had no idea the show returned the night before. However, he did hear that his character had been killed off. Costner didn’t seem happy about the manner in which John Dutton was killed off screen. However, he did claim that there may be more to the story when the rest of the episodes drop. However, it’s unclear if he’ll be watching.
Costner admitted that after learning his character’s death was ruled a suicide, he’s in no rush to tune in to find out what happens next.
Kevin Costner Shares Thoughts on Yellowstone Return and John Dutton’s Fate
“Well, I’m going to be perfectly honest. I didn’t know it was actually airing last night. That’s a swear to God moment. I swear to God,” Costner told The Michael Smerconish Program on Siriux XM. I mean, I’ve been seeing ads with my face all over the place and I’m thinking, ‘Gee, I’m not in that one.’ I’m not in this season.”
“Somebody said, you know, it played last night? And I said, ‘Hmm, okay.’ So no, I found out about it this morning actually,” he continued. “I didn’t see it. I heard it’s a suicide, so that doesn’t make me want to rush to go see it,” Costner said, adding that John Dutton didn’t seem like “a suicide kind of guy.”
Earlier this year, Kevin Costner made it clear that it wasn’t his decision to officially leave Yellowstone. He admitted that he never quit the show, but that because of work obligations, the production of the series didn’t want to schedule around him. This forced his hand, and eventually led to he and the show’s creator, Taylor Sheridan, going their separate ways.
After the drama, it was confirmed that the second half of Yellowstone Season 5 would be the last. However, that’s not a wrap for the franchise. There are currently more spin-offs in the works, as well as Season 2 of the prequel 1923.
Recently, stars Cole Hauser and Kelly Reilly admitted that they would be on board to return to reprise the characters of Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler for another Dutton-based series. However, it’s unclear if fans will get to see more of the modern-day Duttons as the franchise continues to expand.
It seems that fans won’t see more of Kevin Costner in Yellowstone Season 5. However, he has been shown in the promos and his name is still top billing in the opening credits of the series. It’s unfortunate that his character was eliminated. However, it’s definitely setting up a huge plot leading up to the series finale.
