Older adults look back on modern times with sorrow, remembering a time when life was actually affordable. Living in the U.S. certainly comes with its financial challenges and they don’t seem to be getting any easier. A Missouri mom is living this reality while her son tries to purchase his first home. From experience, she discovered that adults aren’t able to afford a house like people used to be able to when she was younger. As she says, “We can’t afford to live, and our kids can afford it even less.”

Loren (@loren__miller) shared a TikTok video discussing how difficult it is to be a homeowner in our modern times. She says her son is making $16 an hour and wants to buy his first home. While looking at homes, he found one for $125k, which is incredibly low for many areas. When they figured out how much it would be for him to own the home monthly, including insurance and everything, it came out to a $1,100 a month payment. Loren announces this with disgust, saying that her son feels dread while searching for a home. Loren now says it’s “unattainable” for our kids to own their own homes. And, as she puts it, “Our government does NOTHING to fix it.”

Loren says that her eldest son just got a new job a few weeks ago. However, right after being hired for the job, “we started a war with Iran” in the U.S. Because of this, gas prices rose from $2.50 a gallon in her area to over $3.00 and climbing. Her son would have to travel 30 miles away from home, which means he’ll be paying an outrageous amount in gas just to work his new job. Knowing how expensive everything is and how difficult it is to survive for anybody living in the U.S., Loren is baffled. She says that if she were just starting out at her age, she could never afford the home she purchased many years ago. It’s difficult to see our children going through harder times than we experienced as new adults.

Loren asks her audience, “How the [expletive] are we expecting these young kids to do it?” She goes on to state, “I’m mad about it for myself but I’m even more mad about it for my children.” I think any parents feel that deeply. One commenter agreed, “26 here. I’ve just given up. I realized I should’ve bought a house when I was 9.” Another commenter shared, “My rent is double my mom’s mortgage and she still thinks I’m just being irresponsible.” This is definitely an attitude that needs to shift far away from here. So many people are struggling and a little empathy for their situations goes a long way.
