Netflix has announced that up-and-coming actress Kimi Rutledge will be joining the cast of Obliterated, an action-comedy series currently in production with the streaming service. Rutledge will be replacing Amalia Yoo, who was originally cast in the series as Maya Choi, a young NSA analyst.
Obliterated, which has begun filming today in Albuquerque, New Mexico, was initially created by Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg, and Josh Heald, known for their work on Netflix’s Cobra Kai (2018). Obliterated will feature an elite special-ops team tasked with stopping a bomb threat in Las Vegas; after the bomb is successfully diffused, the team decides to unwind and celebrate with booze, drugs, and sex – only to find out that the bomb they diffused was a fake. The real bomb is still active somewhere in the city. The highly-trained team, now heavily intoxicated, has “to fight through their impairments, overcome their personal issues, find the real bomb and save the world,” according to Deadline.
Kimi Rutledge and the Cast of ‘Obliterated’
Along with Rutledge, fellow Obliterated cast members include Shelley Hennig (Teen Wolf) as Ava Winters, a by-the-book CIA Agent who is forced to abandon her personal code when her team is forced back to work while drunk; Nick Zano (Legends of Tomorrow) will appear as Chad McKnight, a SEAL Commander, and well-loved party animal. Alyson Gorske (Southern Decadence) will play Lana, a Vegas party girl swept up by the special-ops team; C. Thomas Howell (E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial) will play Haggerty, described by Variety as “the eccentric Army Explosives technician.” Eugene Kim (The Lincoln Lawyer) will play Paul Yung, an Air Force pilot and the only one left sober, Paola Lázaro (Lethal Weapon) will play Marine sniper Angela Gomez, and Terrence Terrell (Criminal Minds) will play Trunk, Chad McKnight’s friend, and wingman.
Kimi Rutledge will be joining Obliterated and replacing Amalia Yoo (Grand Army) as Maya Choi, a young NSA technician who’s in the field for the very first time and “wildly out of her depth.” The reason for the recasting is currently unknown, but Deadline reports that this is Rutledge’s first major role; her past roles include Julie Lee in Half Sisters (2022), an attendant in Shrill (2020), and Valene in Tavern Brawl, a tabletop-RPG-inspired but short-lived TV series.
Obliterated was created by Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg, and Josh Heald, who will also serve as executive producers for the eight-episode series along with Dina Hillier for Counterbalance Entertainment, the studio behind Cobra Kai. An expected release date for Obliterated has not yet been revealed.
