King of the Hill is getting a revival series on the streaming platform Hulu. Deadline reports co-creators Mike Judge and Greg Daniels are returning, as is the original cast. Judge will reprise his role as Hank Hill, and Kathy Najimy will return to voice Hank’s wife, Peggy. We can also look forward to the return of Pamela Adlon as Bobby Hill, Stephen Root as Bill, Johnny Hardwick as Dale, and Lauren Tom as Minh. The original show ran on Fox for 13 seasons from 1997 to 2009. It’s the latest Fox series to get a revival from Hulu. A Futurama revival is also coming to the streamer.
Will ‘King of the Hill’ Revival at Hulu Pay Off?
King of the Hill is set in the fictional town of Arlen, Texas. The show centered on Hank Hill, a traditional Texas family man whose greatest love is his job as a seller of propane and propane accessories. Viewers watched the traditional man’s man navigate a changing world with his substitute teacher wife, Peggy, and his son Bobby who basically defied every expectation Hank had in a son. Hank frequently drank beer with his friends: exterminator and conspiracy theorist Dale, military barber Bill, and the cool but inarticulate Boomhauer. The family also took in and cared for Peggy’s niece Luanne, who was voiced by Clueless star Brittany Murphy. Murphy died in 2009 at the age of 32. Whether Luanne will be brought back with a new voice actress is unknown.
Whether or not the King of the Hill revival will be a success is unknown. This is not the first time Hulu has tried playing to nostalgia, as they also did a revival of Animaniacs in 2020. However, while the show was a moderate success, the upcoming third season will already be its last. And with more and more reboots getting canceled, one wonders if nostalgia is enough to help a show succeed. Can the King of the Hill revival fair better for Hulu?
