Developer Square Enix is having trouble counting to three. Earlier this week at the Tokyo Game Show, Square announced Kingdom Hearts 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue (try saying that 10 times fast). This news came after rumors of a possible Kingdom Hearts 2.9.

The game is another HD collection that will feature Kingdom Hearts: Dream Drop Distance HD, Kingdom Hearts χ Back Cover, and Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep 0.2 – a Fragmentary Passage –.

KH 2.8 Games

Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance is a HD remaster of the 3DS title. This game should be an important play-through for fans, given that it takes place between  Kingdom Hearts 2 and Kingdom Hearts 3.

Back Cover will be a collection of cutscenes from Kingdom Hearts Unchained X, which was a browser game that released only in Japan. The theme of cutscene-only games is also becoming a staple for these HD collections.

Lastly, Birth by Sleep 0.2 – a Fragmentary Passage – is an epilogue to the PlayStation Portable title Birth By Sleep and will revolve around the protagonist Aqua.

The announcement of another HD collection does make it seem like Kingdom Hearts 3 is still far off. However, the addition of new worlds and the in-engine gameplay looks promising; so hopefully it will be worth the wait.

Kingdom Hearts 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue will be released in 2016 for the PlayStation 4. You can see the reveal trailer below.

Does you feel like Square Enix is milking this franchise, or are you just excited for more Kingdom Hearts games while we wait for three? Let us know in the comments section.
