We are still a long way off from Kingdom Hearts 3, but series fans are still expecting some shred of news with the impending release of Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue (try saying that five times fast) toward the end of this month. Now that the decade-long project that was Final Fantasy XV has been wrapped up, the road to Sora’s next big adventure should be a relatively speedy one.
In a Dengeki PlayStation interview, Kingdom Hearts director Tetsuya Nomura revealed that Kingdom Hearts 3 may have customization options. These new features will be making their debut in the Final Chapter Prologue, namely in one of the most anticipated titles of the game, 02. Birth By Sleep- A Fragmentary Passage.
In the new content of “A Fragmentary Passage”, players will be able to customize their character’s outfit using things that are found throughout the environment. Aqua, for example, will be able to wear things like classic Mickey Mouse ears.
In the Dengeki interview, Nomura commented on the customization by saying, “I thought we needed something fun to play around with even with the game’s jam-packed volume. It really changes the character’s look, so please gather a lot of items and design your own Aqua.”
Nomura’s response drew questions as to what this could mean for customization options in the third game. To that, he only said there are other “priorities ahead of us, so it depends on time.” They will, however, be taking note of fans’ reactions to Kingdom Hearts 2.8 to see if the new features are worth exploring further.
As of now, Kingdom Hearts 3 is still in development for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. However, there is no release date or even a release window. With any luck, we will hear more about this at this year’s E3 conference.
