Latest New Mutants Cut Reportedly No Longer Linked to Fox’s X-Men Franchise

I’d say it’s starting to feel like we’ll never see The New Mutants, Fox’s X-Men horror spinoff if it hadn’t already felt that way for well over a year. The film’s original release date was April 13th, 2018. But that was before the massive acquisition of 20th Century Fox by Disney. The merger may have delighted many fans hoping to see the X-Men and Fantastic Four join the MCU. But it also brought about many canceled projects, some of which were Marvel properties. However, Fox had already finished filming two Marvel projects at the time. The first was the almost unanimously despised Dark Phoenix, which itself was delayed twice. The second is The New Mutants, which has now been pushed back three times.

It’s been a troubled production schedule to say the very least. In addition to being delayed, the film has gone through re-edits and is supposed to go through reshoots sometime this year. And Disney wasn’t too enthused with what they saw of the project. However, things have finally begun to look up. The New Mutants received another cut to be more in line with director Josh Boone’s original horror-esque vision. And it’s apparently been testing well with audiences. Now, according to FandomWire, there may be more news to get excited about. Or, at least, be cautiously optimistic about.

New Mutants

That latest cut of The New Mutants also removes all links to Fox’s X-Men universe. The movie mostly takes place in a secret facility where experiments on mutants take place. And as a spinoff, it may not have been difficult to remove all hints or references to the outside world. This would give Kevin Feige an easier time implementing the characters into the MCU if he chooses to do so. Here’s hoping the report is accurate. No word on how the upcoming reshoots will fit in with this latest cut.

The New Mutants stars Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones), Anya-Taylor Joy (Split), Charlie Heaton (Stranger Things), Blu Hunt (Another Life), and Henry Zaga (Trinkets). It will release April 3rd, 2020 barring some other disaster delay.
