Just because Secret Invasion might have been a dud, it doesn’t mean that the Marvel Cinematic Universe is showing any signs of slowing down. Marvel Studios recently revealed the trailer for the second season of Loki, the Disney+ series. Tom Hiddleston will be reprising his role as the God of Mischief, and Owen Wilson, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Sophia Di Martino, and Jonathan Majors will all be returning as well.

Loki Season 2 Trailer Breakdown

Let’s go over what we can expect in the next season of Loki, as per the above trailer. Right from the start, it seems clear that Loki and Mobius (Wilson) will be back together again after the events of the first season. The pair meet a man named OB, played by Ke Huy Quan (Everything Everywhere All at Once), who is joining the cast this season. The pair seek his help because Loki is time slipping – slipping between timelines – and OB seems to be the head of the Repairs & Advancements sector of the Time Variance Authority

Unfortunately, even though OB knows about the time slipping, he can’t seem to fix it and it’s not even supposed to be impossible in the TVA. Loki is slipping through time, seeing his past self, and he’s on a quest to stop the world from being destroyed. This is most likely a direct result of Sylvie (Di Martino) killing He Who Remains (Jonathan Majors) last season. There’s a brief shot of Loki pruning part of the TVA to reveal the Kang structure underneath before he and Mobius go to what looks like the past.

The trailer makes it clear that we will be getting a lot of Mobius and Loki together in Loki season two, which is fantastic, as they were a great pair in the first season. They even have some pie together. Some more characters are getting up to time shenanigans, as both Hunter B-15 (Wunmi Mosaku) and Sylvie are in different outfits, with Sylvie seemingly confined to working at McDonald’s. But a couple of action set pieces make it obvious that she won’t be flipping burgers for the entire season. She’ll be fighting with the rest of them.

We get an interesting shot of the destroyed Citadel at the End of Time, followed by Mobius in a space suit held together by duct tape. Venturing out into space, he seems to be going close to something that looks like the rainbow-colored branches of a tree. This could be an extension of the Bifrost – it could be the famed Tree of Yggdrasil from Norse mythology or at least the Marvel version of it. After another action scene with Loki, we finally get Sylvie and Loki back in the same room together, where he reminds her that they are indeed gods.

In another scene, which seems like it’s still in the past, Loki performs some illusion magic on someone, and we see the shadow horns of his helmet. Then there’s a quick Ravonna Renslayer (Mbatha-Raw) appearance with her wielding a large weapon. Time starts to play more of a factor when Loki looks at a compass or timekeeper, and we hear ticking along with the words, “The Timeline Is Running Out.” Finally, we get a glimpse of Majors as Victor Timely, following his appearance in the post-credits scene of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.

The biggest surprise in the trailer is Miss Minutes, voiced by Tara Strong, who seems to grow Kaiju-sized as a white ghost. She terrorizes the old-timey town before we go back to the TVA with OB, Hunter B-15, Loki, and Mobius. Loki warns that a war is coming while pointing to a mural of an army of fighting Kangs. In a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it shot, it seems like the TVA is becoming infected. The shot of the Citadel at the End of Time might be from Renslayer’s perspective, as she is in the Void from the first season of Loki.

Loki and Sylvie seem to be handling themselves in an unknown location, facing Hunters who keep using time doors to teleport in. But the pair blows them away with some of their magic. We then get the title treatment before Mobius makes fun of Loki for creating illusions of himself, except he’s talking to the wrong one. One last supercut of Loki falling into some open water, falling through the TVA, running, and a man trapped in some kind of box is shown before the trailer ends.

It’s great that Marvel held back on what’s in store for the second season of the series, as we don’t know much more about it than what we already knew coming out of Quantumania. It’s sure to be a timely and mysterious adventure when the second season of Loki comes to Disney+ on October 6, 2023.
