If you have been keeping up with the Marvel Cinematic Universe, you will know that Disney Plus has a new MCU series coming out this year. Tom Hiddleston is back as Loki, and I personally am super excited to see what they have in store for us. Loki will be MCU’s third television show available on DisneyPlus after WandaVision and Falcon and the Winter Soldier.
Just like Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Loki will be a six-episode series and is premiering on June 11. Fans are particularly excited for this show especially after the character of Loki was killed off in Avengers: Infinity War. However, we have all been pleasantly surprised with his return just as we were with the return of Vision in WandaVision.
Despite the cast and its producers remaining as quiet as possible about the new series production, since the release of their teasers and trailers, we have been able to gain some insight into what to expect. Marketing campaigns usually can’t help but reveal more than they mean to, and I for one can’t help but bite at any little bit of information I can get.
In preparation for the show, let’s dive into what we know about the series so far.
The Cast: Who’s in it?
As said before, the new DisneyPlus series will kick off on June 11, 2021, and will be starring the oh-so-handsome Tom Hiddleston, but who else will be in the series that you might know?
It seems like the next biggest star will be Owen Wilson coming in to play the role of Mobius M. Mobius. Mobius is a key authority within the Time Variance Authority (TVA). Alongside Wilson, we will also see actresses Gugu Mbatha-Raw as Ravonna Renslayer, Sophia Di Martino as Lady Loki and Jaimie Alexander will come back as Sif. Oscar nominee Richard E. Grant has a role as well. Although, his character has yet to be disclosed.
Kate Herron, known for Sex Education and Daybreak on Netflix, is directing while the head writer is Michael Waldron. You may know Waldron for his work on Rick and Morty or the show Community. With such a great group of performers and producers, we are sure to have another high-quality show.
The Plot: Isn’t Loki Supposed to be Dead?
As we can see from this exclusive clip, the series takes place on the timeline after Avengers: Endgame.
After escaping the Avengers, it seems that Loki is only recaptured by the TVA just mere moments later. The TVA is an organization that monitors multiple timelines and makes sure that things go according to plan across the universe. In the clip, Loki and Mobius talk about how time passes differently within the TVA. From this, it is essentially made clear that we will be doing quite a bit of time traveling in the show.
Loki also expresses that Thor and Heimdall both better be ready for him so we will probably be seeing them at one point or another.
The Timeline and Loki Variants
From this trailer, released in early April, we get several new hints about what to expect within the series as well.
When they ask Loki to verify everything he’s ever said, we see that this Loki is actually a variant of several other Lokis. It marks him as Variant Loki 1130 – that’s a lot of Lokis. Besides this, he is also wearing a jacket that says “Variant” on the back. This leads us to believe that this Loki will be seeing many of his other Loki variants.
We also know that a Lady Loki has been cast and within the trailer, it might be showing the two of them talking. On The Writer’s Panel Podcast, screenwriter Michael Waldron comments on Loki’s “struggle with identity” which may dwell on Loki’s past or his feelings towards how he sees himself as a shapeshifter. Who knows what might come up, especially with Loki’s nature as a pansexual being brought up recently as well.
The Tesseract
In an interview with Stephen Colbert, Hiddleston hints that parts of the plots including what happens with the tesseract. He says that the two things he gets asked the most are if Loki really dies and what becomes of the tesseract. He confirms that both of those questions will be answered within the show.
As we know, Loki usually doesn’t play along with anyone’s rules but his own. So, in order for the TVA to convince him into compliance, he must be more than likely aware of his own death or something else possibly more devastating to him. It has already been confirmed in a new synopsis on Amazon that Loki is facing the deletion of his reality.
In the trailer, Mobius is quoted saying, “We protect the proper flow of time. You picked up the tesseract breaking reality. You’re going to help us fix it.” So, we know that Loki will be traveling with the TVA from time to time and that the tesseract and possibly the infinity stones will be involved. I have a pretty good feeling that he will mess things up even more before he fixes them. Knowing Loki, however, I am sure he will be doing everything he can in order to save his own rear. Either way, I am sure he will be up to several mischievous shenanigans.
Loki Figurine
Recently, a Loki figurine was released from the new series. On the back of the box, it summarizes the show’s plot. It says that Loki is working for the TVA in order to fix the sacred timeline. This points to a separate and more important timeline compared to the others. In the trailer, they do show just how messed up the timeline has become because of Loki on a screen with a badly frayed line. However, it seems that some breaks are more important than others. The key timeline then will be the main focus on their attention.
There have been suggestions made by Marvel that the Loki series will lead up to the events in some of the other MCU films being released soon. This or another one of the Loki variants may be making themselves present within the upcoming Thor: Love and Thunder as well as Doctor Stange in the Multiverse of Madness. The Scarlet Witch from WandaVision may be involved as well. So, in the end, it will hopefully all tie up together nicely.
With all of that information, we at least know that we have a lot to look forward to in the upcoming show. The MCU and Disney have been working hard (even throughout the pandemic) to provide their fans with quality entertainment, and there is still even more within MCU’s phase four to look forward to this year.
We also already know that Loki will have a second season. Pretty exciting stuff. Are you looking forward to it? Let us know in the comments below.
