It’s time to head back to the golden age of the Jedi Knights – Star Wars: The High Republic is here.
Lucasfilm and Disney have announced this book/comic project through a recently-posted Star Was.com article and YouTube video. The books will explore the era of Jedi Knights 200 years prior to Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace. The series will have multiple phases (somewhat like Disney’s own Marvel Cinematic Universe), with Phase One consisting of five books by various different authors.
Among the titles are Star Wars: The High Republic: Light of the Jedi by Charles Soule, Star Wars: The High Republic: Into the Dark by Claudia Gray, Star Wars: The High Republic: A Test of Courage by Justina Ireland, Star Wars: The High Republic Adventures by Daniel José Older and Star Wars: The High Republic by Cavan Scott.
The YouTube video mentions that the authors are exploring “the golden age” of the Jedi, centuries before the Clone Wars, Skywalkers, and Jar-Jar Binks. Whereas the prequel trilogy told the fall of the Jedi Order and the original and sequel trilogies had a universe where the Jedi were extinct, we will see the Jedi Knights in their prime here.
The Jedi in The High Republic has been described as like rangers in the Wild West in this era of the SW universe. The Republic, as grand as it is, doesn’t have a hold over all the reaches of the galaxy. This ‘Wild West’ galaxy, therefore, will provide an exciting backdrop for a plethora of new Star Wars stories.
The Skywalker saga ended December last year with The Rise of Skywalker. Although the film was given mixed critical reception, it earned a fair amount of money at the Box Office. As to whether The High Republic ventures into the world of film remains to be seen – although if the books generate enough money, you can bet on it.
