Sony delivered the first trailer for Madame Web, giving us a twist on the superhero genre and its expanded Spider-Man universe. The female-led film stars Dakota Johnson as the titular character, Sydney Sweeney playing Julia Carpenter/Spider-Woman, Isabel Merced as Anya Corazon/Spider-Girl, Emma Roberts as Mary Parker, and Celeste O’Connor as another Spider-Woman, aka Mattie Franklin.
The film follows a paramedic, Cassandra Webb (Johnson), who gains psychic powers, which enable her to see into the future. As a result of her new-found ability, she’s able to see how people meet their maker, and bravely attempts to prevent their deaths. In one instance, a man named Ezekiel Sims, played by Tahar Rahim, is hunting down the other woman leads. He is trying to stop the rest of the women from their destiny to become Spider-Heroes.
Additionally, the pic will also star Mike Epps, Adam Scott, and Zosia Mamet.
Madame Web Trailer Is a Breath of Fresh Air for the Sony Spider-Man Universe and the Superhero Genre
The next entry in Sony’s not-yet-connected universe is helmed by S.J. Clarkson (Jessica Jones). She co-wrote the film with Claire Parker from a story by Kerem Sanga. This will be the first of the studio’s Spider-Man universe pics to be directed by a woman.
Unsurprisingly, Madame Web sets up a busy year for Sony, which will largely be dominated by superhero action flicks. Indeed, 2024 will see the release of the female-led Spider-Man film on February 14, with Kraven the Hunter slated for August 30, and Venom 3 rounding out the year on November 8. The year will lack any competition as Marvel Studios only has Deadpool 3 set for July 26. Meanwhile, James Gunn’s Joker: Folie à Deux is scheduled to drop next year on October 4.
