Fans of the Mafia series are, needless to say, incredibly excited about the upcoming release of Mafia: Definitive Edition. The first Mafia is a classic that spawned an infamous series but fails to hold up in the current day due to its age. When it was announced, many including myself were excited to see how much better this remake is. Unfortunately, it looking like we’re going to wait a little bit longer. Today, the teams at Hanger13 and 2K announce that Mafia: Definitive Edition is getting delayed to September 25th. The delay comes one month after the originally planned release date.

To explain what led up to this decision, the teams released the following statement:

Though we’d originally planned to release the game one month earlier on August 28, finalizing everything in time for that launch date has become increasingly challenging due to the ongoing global COVID-19 pandemic, and the last thing we want to do is compromise the quality of the experience.”

As much as this is depressing, the delay does make sense. COVID-19 complicates things in terms of development, due to having to work from home and away from their co-workers. Not only that but Mafia: Definitive Edition being released in August would likely result in a lack of polish over it being released later. Given how broken and unfinished some games release these days, I think I’m happy waiting a little bit longer.

For those like me who are upset about the news, it isn’t all bad. With the delay, the team announces that they’re showing an extended gameplay look on July 22nd. That’s only two weeks away and should give a better idea of what to expect when playing. I’ll be watching the gameplay reveal, and I hope you will too. You can even see 15 seconds of the game on their official Twitter account.
