After a seemingly indefinite wait, Capcom has finally released a gameplay trailer for Mai Shiranui as she makes her way from Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves to Street Fighter 6. Mai is the second character that has crossed over from their own franchise to Capcom’s premier fighter, and this is just the beginning.
Mai is the third character joining the SF6 roster in season 2 and follows the crack-shooting Terry Bogard and psycho-crushing M. Bison. Her gameplay trailer shows off all her notable normals, specials, and an alarming number of nasty mixups and fiery supers.
Chun Li and Mai seem to have a unique interaction before the start of their match, which shows them doing a Drive Impact at the exact same time. This comes as a surprise, as we didn’t see Terry and Ken get a similar treatment. Capcom Vs. SNK fans among you might remember how the two brawlers were secretly good friends and had unique intros in multiple fighting games.
Capcom did not hold back when it comes to giving Mai unique abilities in Street Fighter 6, according to the gameplay trailer. Her titular Kachousen sees her throwing her fan, and although it is weak and easy to beat with fireballs and normals. If held down, it not only acts like a standard projectile but also has a follow-up attack if blocked, providing the Mai player with a lot of mixup potential by putting opponents in a high-low situation at a seemingly safe range.
She has her Ryuuenbu (spin), Hissatsu Shinobi Bachi (cartwheel into elbow), Hishou Ryuuenjin (dragon punch), diver kick, air throw, and some kind of lane-changing target combo that is just as trippy as it was with Terry.
When we come to her supers, we see the real uniqueness in her kit. Her level 1 super, once it lands, gives her 5 stocks that can enhance all of her aforementioned special moves and even her level 1 and 2 supers. This not only adds versatility, but just straight-up higher damage as well, along with some cool new animations.
Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves fans will be happy to see her new costume coming to the game, as her Outfit 2 can be unlocked for free through the world tour mode.
Capcom didn’t confirm her exact release date, but based on past experiences, Mai Shiranui will likely become playable in Street Fighter 6 in February next month. The only character left for this season is Elena, and just the mere mention of her name sends shivers down the spines of Street Fighter 4 fans. We’ll have to wait and see if the team can give her the makeover she desperately needs.
