In a video posted to the social media platform X, Maine’s Democratic Senate nominee, Troy Jackson, spoke out against Elon Musk’s pledge to contribute millions to struggling GOP Senate races. He claims that the former senior advisor to President Trump can’t simply buy the government he wants.

Commenters under a Reddit post that continues the conversation were largely in favor of Jackson, while some also noted the current political climate and the role that money plays within.

Elon Musk founded a Public Affairs Committee titled America PAC, which focuses on financing voter canvassing, grassroots mobilization, and conservative political campaigns. Within this committee, Musk pledged $100,000,000 to help particular conservative campaigns, one being Republican Maine Senate nominee Susan Collins.

According to Jackson, “Here’s why he’s spending $100 million across these states: because he wants to have people that are totally beholden to him and Donald Trump. Making sure that we’re getting tax cuts for billionaires on the back of our healthcare system, on the back of our hospitals.”

He then goes on to explain that he believes Musk doesn’t care about Susan Collins as a nominee so much as he does himself. In the same video, Jackson accuses Musk of trying to purchase the government he wants. He says, “You don’t get to buy the government that you want. This is about all of us coming together and fighting for the government we deserve. And you’re not in it.”

This wouldn’t be Musk’s first foray into the political world. From January 20, 2025 – May 30, 2025, he was Senior Advisor to the President for Government Efficiency under President Donald Trump.

Comments and Reactions Towards Maine Democratic Nominee Remarking Against Elon Musk

One of the top comments under a Reddit post that engages in the topic reflects on Troy Jackson’s verbiage. However, it also recognizes how the current state of politics is, writing, “Well…I understand the sentiment, but he is kinda wrong there. You really can buy the government you want. You shouldn’t be able to buy the government you want.“

Another commenter reflected on the reality of the announcement, writing, “With his intervention in Maine, Musk joins nearly 100 other billionaires who are financially supporting Collins’ bid for a sixth US Senate term.“

Similarly, someone else wrote, “It dumbfounds me that SCOTUS could characterize the “speech” of 100 billionaires as being equal to the “speech” of 100 working Joes without giving a thought to how much louder billionaires are able to “speak”, as if there was no distinction.“

As the conversation continues to gain traction online, more and more people are leaving their thoughts and opinions in the comments section below.
