CCP announces the launch of its newest title Gunjack, a first person arcade shooter made specifically for virtual reality. The VR shooter will be on the Samsung Gear VR platform, the title is set in CCP’s iconic EVE universe, the setting for the popular MMO EVE Online. The game will be purchasable on the Oculus store for the Samsung Gear platform and will retail for $9.99 according to CCP’s blog.
The game release follows CCP’s move, two weeks ago, to raise $30 million to bolster the development of virtual reality content. Gunjack is not the only VR project CCP has in development, the eagerly awaited EVE: Valkyrie is aimed to be released on the Oculus Rift in spring 2016. CEO Hilmar Veigar Pétursson of CCP said, “We believe VR will revolutionize not just video games, but the wider technology and media industry as a whole.”
Gunjack gives the player a gun turret view on a mining ship in the Outer Ring region of EVE space, their aim, to protect the mining ship from pirates. The game has been developed by CCP’s Shanghai studio, the same studio which developed the PlayStation 3 exclusive title, Dust 514.
Gunjack has been described as a showcase title for Gear VR by the executive producer Jean-Charles Gaudechon, saying that they pushed as far as they could go, “to reach a level of immersion that would transport players to a different world.” The game, set on an ORE mining platform, will most likely give a good indication of the technology that will be used in EVE: Valkyrie.
