Man Says Girlfriend’s Family Expects Him to Sleep on the Floor During New York Trip Because of Their ‘Religious Beliefs’: ‘Even Dogs Get a Bed’

A humiliating demand

A man claims to have received a harsh wake-up call about his in-laws while planning a trip to New York to meet his girlfriend’s grandparents. Going by Final-Toe-9117 on Reddit, this boyfriend posted to r/inlaw to explain his situation: his girlfriend’s family demands he sleep on the floor. For context, “her parents told me that they will not allow us to sleep in the same room for their religious beliefs,” Final-Toe-9117 wrote.

As to why he couldn’t just sleep on a couch in the house, the one at Final-Toe-9117’s grandparents-in-law’s place is a “prized possession” and off limits to him. He also added how his girlfriend’s parents demand that he not reserve a hotel and stay in the house with them, despite having to sleep on the floor. It goes without saying that his question to Reddit is: “Am I overreacting for wanting the bare minimum of a bed to sleep in?”

Among the hundreds who commented on the boyfriend’s post, many expressed how they couldn’t believe that he was being ‘set up’ to be treated like that. “Bro, for real? Sleep on the floor like a dog??? Have a little self-respect, stand your ground, or stay at home,” read a top comment. “Even dogs get a bed,” added a reply.

Countless others chimed in with similar responses to Final-Toe-9117’s predicament. “Stay in a hotel. Their arrangement is rude and ridiculous,” wrote a user. “They are disrespectful, hypocritical, condescending, ridiculous,” harshly remarked another, adding how the parents’ “religious beliefs” bit is likely a test to see how they can get the boyfriend to follow their orders.

For additional context, Final-Toe-9117 explained how, before this New York trip, he had treated his in-laws to a trip to the Bahamas. “I didn’t ask for gas money, money for food, nothing,” he recalled. OP continued, saying how his girlfriend’s family is problematic, but he still loves her with his whole heart. Still, the claims that her parents want him to sleep on the floor simply because of strict, abstract conditions rubbed him the wrong way, and it’s not hard to see why.

This New York Trip Became Turning Point for This Boyfriend’s Relationship with His Girlfriend’s Parents

Fortunately, Reddit has his back; as one commenter aptly warned him: “This isn’t about accommodating or appeasing her parents. It’s about you now seizing the opportunity to establish boundaries that are acceptable to you.” That said, Final-Toe-9117 has responded to all the suggestions and support, saying that he’ll forgo letting his in-laws control him. He plans to stay at a hotel, and whether the parents agree with that or not is their problem.
