The new era of DC under James Gunn’s creative vision has given us plenty of answers, but we have many questions. One thing left in the air is whether Margot Robbie will be the DCU version of Harley Quinn or if someone else will take on the role. With some actors reprising their roles and most not from the now-dead DCEU, it is unknown what the future holds. The Barbie star did weigh in with her thoughts on the subject.
The actress debuted as the character in Suicide Squad (2016). She reprised the role in 2020’s Birds of Prey, which she produced under her production company LuckyChap. Her last time wielding her bat and colorful makeup was in Gunn’s The Suicide Squad in 2021.
Margot Robbie on the Future of Harley Quinn in the DCU
Talking to Variety about her production company, she was asked about her maniacal clown. It was also prompted as Lady Gaga will play the character in the non-canon film Joker: Folie à Deux, the sequel to the Joaquin Phoenix-led Joker film. While she does not say she is not open to returning to the role, she talks about passing the baton to someone new, similarly to Spider-Man and Batman roles going to new actors.
I always wanted Harley to be a character that would get passed on to other actresses to play, the way there are so many iconic male characters. That was always the dream for her. Harley’s so fun and can go in so many different directions. You put her in someone else’s hands, and it’s like, ‘What are they going to do with her?’ The options are endless.
Margot Robbie in an interview with Variety
While it is only speculation, there is possibly evidence that Margot Robbie could continue to be our Harley Quinn in the DCU. While many of the previous actors are not returning to their roles, the ones who worked with Gunn are coming back. John Cena and the crew from Peacemaker are coming back for season 2. Blue Beetle star Xolo Maridueña will return as one of the final DCEU characters. We will also receive a series about Amanda Waller featuring Viola Davis in the titular role. Since the Wolf of Wall Street star is a part of that canon of Peacemaker and Waller, she could come back if that is a part of Gunn’s vision.
The DCU begins with Creature Commandos, an animated series that will introduce us to new characters who will be featured in an animated and live-action form. The theatrical debut comes next year with Superman: Legacy.
