Venezuelan actress María Gabriela De Faría, known for her role in Animal Control, has joined the cast of Superman: Legacy. Directed by James Gunn, the new DC Studios movie will follow Clark Kent as he attempts to reconcile his Kryptonian culture with his humble human upbringing. Serving as both the first step in Warner Bro.’s rebooted DC slate and Gunn‘s first directorial outing since becoming a co-head of the studio, Superman: Legacy has a lot to live up to. María Gabriela De Faría, who’ll be starring as the supervillain known as the Engineer, will be joining a cast that includes David Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan, Nathan Fillion, and more.

Mostly known for her comedy performances, María Gabriela De Faría is taking a turn at something more serious. She’ll be joining the cast of Superman: Legacy as Angela Spica, also known as The Engineer, whose name comes from the nanites in her blood. The Engineer, created by Warren Ellis and Bryan Hitch, made her comics debut in 1999. In the comics, Angela is the second person to become The Engineer and the nanotechnology in her body gives her a wide array of superpowers, including shapeshifting, durability, and technopathy. It’s currently not clear how much of her character will make it into Gunn’s on-screen version.

In taking on the role of The Engineer, De Faría has put her name on a cast list that includes Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, aka Green Lantern, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, and Anthony Carrigan as Rex Mason, aka Metamorpho. David Corenswet (The Politician, We Own This City) will be starring in the lead role as Clark Kent/Superman, while Rachel Brosnahan (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) stars as Lois Lane.

James Gunn’s new movie will center around a Superman who’s struggling to find his place in the world, torn between his massive Kryptonian legacy and his simple, human upbringing. Deadline describes his character as “the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way,” and a kind man living in a world that sees kindness as “old-fashioned.”

Superman: Legacy, directed by James Gunn and starring María Gabriela De Faría as The Engineer, is set to be released on July 11th, 2025.
