Mark Ruffalo was recently asked about Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man’s “possible” return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Ruffalo took over as the Hulk in 2012 in The Avengers, which is where both Downey and Ruffalo co-starred together. These two might not have had a best-friend relationship much in the MCU, but they were still a fun pair through the movies as they were both brains that were needed for the team.
Mark Ruffalo on Possibility of Iron Man’s Return
Mark Ruffalo had a spotlight panel during Emerald City Comic-Con, and he was asked about the chances of Downey returning as the fan-favorite superhero that started off the whole MCU. The actor honestly didn’t give a “yes” or “no” type of answer but instead said: “Iron Man’s death was the emotional crux of Avengers: Endgame. It also emphasized the end of an era as Marvel Studios bid goodbye to its inaugural hero. But just because he’s dead, doesn’t mean he cannot return. The franchise has either faked or worked around the idea of death so many times in the Infinity Saga, it’s fairly easy to bring back Downey’s Tony Stark.”
As it was mentioned before, Marvel Studios doesn’t have any plans on bringing Iron Man, Tony Stark’s role back into the MCU, not even for a quick flashback scene. Of course, then there’s the possibility of a variant popping up but there’s not much information on that either at this time. Tony Stark basically created the MCU in other words, as he was the first movie in the timeline and also the first superhero. He held a big legacy on his shoulders and he lived up to everything he wanted to be…a person who saved good people. And that is exactly what he did at the end of Avengers: Endgame.
