The season finale for Marvel’s What If…? has finally come, bringing with it an action-packed ending. It also brings the final performance of Chadwick Boseman in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. For the uninitiated, Marvel’s What If…? explores the concept of the multiverse, an infinite number of worlds. Each one is slightly different, such as one where Killmonger takes over. Each story is followed and narrated by a cosmic being called The Watcher, who (you guessed it) watches it all go down. The season finale that aired on October 6 brings an end to a two-episode-long battle against Ultron himself. As a common courtesy, there’s plenty of spoilers ahead, so read on with caution.
Who in the What if Worlds Can Beat a Juiced up Ultron?
The normal format of What If…? has been very singular at this point, focusing on one succinct universe and one story per episode. However, the last couple of episodes have brought everything together against a much greater threat. In a world where Ultron takes the Vision body in Avengers: Age of Ultron, he doesn’t stop there. Soon enough, Thanos appears, and the new Ultron disposes of him and takes the Infinity Stones for himself. With unlimited power on his hands and a need to destroy all life, nothing can stop him. Not even The Watcher can stand up to him as he achieved multiverse levels of strength. With few options left, The Watcher breaks his oath of non-interference to bring together the rag-tag heroes of the past episodes to make The Guardians of the Multiverse (explained in detail by Game Revolution here). Thanks to a climactic and tense struggle against Ultron, they can contain his vast power forever in Marvel’s What If finale.
A Farewell to Chadwick Boseman’s T’Challa
One of the things that we can appreciate about this season of What If is the presence of Chadwick Boseman as T’Challa of Wakanda. Though the first anniversary of Chadwick’s passing recently came and went, we’ve been lucky enough to see more of him. The show itself was created before he passed of his terminal cancer last year, and the voice lines had been entirely recorded by that point. Though T’Challa doesn’t play his usual kingly self much in the series, many fans have been happy to see more of his legendary performance as the keen Wakandan prince. Chadwick Boseman’s final performance for the MCU was certainly a memorable one.
So, what will become of What If…? Kevin Feige of Marvel Studios has already confirmed that a season 2 is underway. The pandemic slowed the production of season 1, and with further support garnered from its premiere, there are no signs of stopping. No official release date has been given, but fans can’t wait to see more of what the multiverse has in store.
